Is this NO-E odd?

When I posted a pic of this NO-E in another recent thread, Leatherhog commented on the color of the handle slabs. I've looked at them more closely and they are primarily black with some greenish color showing through most obviously in the valleys of the diamond pattern. It's pretty faint though. I've been looking at a lot of Ergos on the forum, but haven't seen one quite like this. I've seen the much paler color like that on my BA-E. This is what the majority of E handles look like. I think it's black micarta, but the color seems more greenish-tan. You can see it in the pic. I've also seen a few with the tan handles. I'm sure there are some variants out there with other combos. I added the BBSHSHII because the handles are similar to my NO-E. Just wanted the opinion of the INFI-addicts as to whether or not this is a strange combo. And no, I'm not sending it to anyone to inspect first hand. Sneaky HOGS! Thanks for the help.

id say they are unusual. my ergos have/had the blk micarta that looked more brown, until oiled.

I was going to say they look oiled.

But thanks for posting that picture. I just figured out a knife I got today is a NO E not a BA E as it was traded to me as. .265 thick!

Looks like you may have paper or linen micarta instead of the standard canvas. As for the color variation, that's completely normal from batch to batch. If the manufacturer doesn't mix the resin up well enough before they start pouring it out you can get variations in the color.
The BA-E in your pic has the slabs I'd expect to see.

My ST-56 & coated ZT-SH have tan slabs that are much redder than the EU series. Different batch, different shade.

BTW, the SHSHII has the half-moon pommel; not a bird's beak.

Looks like black paper slabs on the NO-E... similiar to one of my SH-E's below. Could be black linen on your NO-E though?

How would I tell the difference between black paper and black linen? I appreciate all the input so far. Any idea if this was an optional handle material or if it has something to do with when it was produced?

It's been so long since my Black/Black NOE has been clean and/or unblemished I can't remember.:D

But I do think yours may just be a little odd :)

Black canvas will have the rough texture you are familiar with, Linen has a visible pattern but often will look and feel smooth, and paper will have no discernable layering.

I would say definitely NOT Black Paper... Looks like one of the Darker Black Canvas's.

I'd bet anything on the fact it's not Paper Micarta

I agree with Raden.......you can see the canvas/linen lines.......even without a close up...I would say oiled or just some dark canvas.
