Is this normal for a utx 85?

I have owned at least 20 microtechs but never a utx-85 (well one for about 12 hours). I have never seen this happen even with opening and closing TONS of times. I have not opened and closed this knife nearly as much as some of my ultratechs or combat troodons. (I'm talking about the bare metal showing because of the switch rubbing)

Of what material is the switch made?
Steel rubbing on anodized aluminum will remove the anodize. Even though the aluminum oxide anodize is harder than steel, it's thin. So the steel will rub through it.
On the other hand, if the switch is made out of plastic, BTSOOM.

Do you feel a spring under the switch? That's not a crazy old model, but it is older, looks like wear that would be normal if the spring is not pushing that switch out enough. Microtech will fix it, they won't refinish.

My Combat Troodon has a rub mark, it's just friction from the switch rubbing on the aluminum. Moving parts means friction, that's all.

It’s aluminum on aluminum and typically Microtechs won’t do what’s in OP’s picture. I have some old ones and ones that have been open/closed thousands of times.

I’d almost want to say that something may have gotten caught under the slider at some point.

That's what I was thinking. I bought this knife brand new from an authorized dealer a little over 2 weeks ago. No reason it should have this much wear already as I've only carried it a few times and have only fired it maybe 100 times. This isn't an old model either. It was produced in the last 6 months I'm pretty sure.

It is definitely unfortunate, especially if you bought it to collect and not really use. I’d try contacting Microtech and seeing what they say, because it’s definitely not normal.

As far as someone else mentioning the spring underneath, that’s not the problem. When you press down on the button the spring gets depressed and the button touches the body anyways. The spring is only there so the button doesn’t jiggle as much.

As far as refinishing goes, Protech used some sort of compound to refinish a couple knives I sent to them a while back. The black anodizing had a bunch of wear on it, and they made it look almost like new again. I’m not sure if Microtech can do something similar, but it’s worth asking them and finding out. If you contact them, report back here if you don’t mind.
