Hi, just got into collecting knives, my first knife (although very small) was a sog fusion micron, fell in love with its small size and price, then I bought a Cold steel voyager xl tanto point, and im probably now going to buy a kershaw baby boa and a sypderco. Something ive noticed though is that the very edge of the blade is always smooth, however if i tilt the blade just a little bit on its side it becomes sharp, is this normal ?

For example ^ <-- imagine this is the blade edge of the knife, the tip will always be smooth, however if I slant it to its side like this / it becomes very sharp, why is that ? Shouldnt the blades edge be the sharpest and not on its side ?

Kind regards, btw love the site :)

Do you notice this when you are trying to shave hair? Like laying the blade flat on your skin doesn't shave well but angling the knife makes it shave? I think that is caused by the angle allowing the edge to bite into the hair instead of pushing the hair over and then sliding by.

If you notice it when you are cutting paper, then I would say you might have a wire edge that is not aligned and is pushed over to one side. Does it only do it when you tilt the blade in one direction, or both?

hi, both sides basically, ive literally tried to slowly cut myself (I know sounds crazy) but just a little, no blood shed, just to see if the the edge cuts, but once I tilt it to its side (any side) it does a better job at it.

Sounds to me like it has a burr raised that is leaned to the side. If I'm understanding you right, anyway.

That's a good question then. I'm tired and can't think of a good reason. Maybe someone else has an idea.

It either sounds like a wierd asymmetrical grind or a big burr on the side of the blade. Try sharpening it on a fine stone and see what happens.

agree with dangreco as to bevel. recently i purchased a not inexpensive tact [100$] discounted & the edge bevels were not equal.this contributes to uneven bite of knife, however i nearly always rebevel my knives so when i finished it cut extremely well. it behooves members to check bevels in a good light.

That would be my recommendation,,,,,try stropping. Could try a piece of leather or the rough back side of your belt.
