I am helping my brother gut a house that was flooded due to hurricane Sandy. I was tearing out the carpet and used my Vantage pro small for some of the tasks. Here are the tasks.
1. Cut the sheetrock paper that was stuck to vents in the cieling for ventilation. (about 24" of cutting sheetrock paper w/paint on it)
2. Cut about 24' of carpet. The carpet is 20 yr old burbury that probably had sand dust imbedded in it.

Thats it....and it totally dulled my blade...so I can run my finger down the blade without cutting it. I can't cut paper...nothing....and it was hair cutting sharp prior to the job!!!

Is this normal? I was expecting S30V to outlast a standard box cutter style blade.

Carpet can trap a lot of sand that will quickly dull an edge. Also depends on the angle of the edge you keep on your Pro.

Totally normal.. I cut carpet with my Dozier once.. It was butter knife dull in about the same amount of footage.. Carpet is a killer on edges..

It's no problem though.. just sharpened it back up..:)

I would say it depends on a few factors:
1) how sharp was the blade prior to using it for this
2) what angle was the blade sharpened to
3) was it still factory sharp or had it been sharpened

Drywall and sand are very abrasive. I would say the drywall is more destructive to an edge than the carpet was. Just my opinion though.

Carpet layers change blades in the edge trimmer, and utility knife many times a day. Carpet is among the nastiest stuff to cut.

I've seen videos on youtube where this guy cut many small pieces of rope and the knife is phone book paper cutting sharp afterwards. Guess thats what I was thinking was going to happen after this small job. BTW, I never made it into the sheetrock portion of the the sheetrock. I was just cutting the paper/paint that stuck onto the grills I was pulled off. I'm thinking next time, use my buck with 440. If I need to resharpen, at least make it something easy to resharpen:cool:

I've done that and had the same results. A serrated edge does work better for that. DM

440 isn't any easier to resharpen than S30V, They are both notorious for being difficult to resharpen. Maybe you were thinking of 420.
