Is this normal?

Hey all I just took the coating off my bk14 and on the handle there are these deep grooves it's a newer knife that had a coating and was kept oiled so it's not pitting from rust

anyway is this normal ? Or was it never finished right

Seems normal to me, most of the knives under the coatings are a little rough in the handle area.

I'm guessing that's the second main purpose of the coating, covering the little flaws up.

I believe the handle sections are as rolled steel and do not see any finish work from Ka-Bar.
To answer your question: yes, that looks normal to me.

Okay thx all just seemed a bit extra rough

any ideas on how to make it look better as its a bit to rough for sandpaper I think

file maybe?

Finish work like that is usually prepped *before* heat-treat, because afterwards it's too much work. You'll find out why. ;)

A drum sander would be the way to go.

Factory knives in the Becker price range don't get careful finish grinding because it costs time, and it gets covered by the coating anyway.

paint it? :D

also, that dimple seems to indicate it was a show special second. so, possibly even rougher than normal. perhaps not :D

Yeah it was a factory second E gave me at blade

i was curious as of how that got there is that to show its a second or is that what makes it a second

heck what makes it a second?

You're on a knife forum where folks (like me) spend hours and hours discussing things that nobody else know or cares about; and you're asking about "normal???"

Seriously, yes - it looks normal to me. Coated knives do not get the fine finishing touches that naked knives get and steel looks like that unless caressed into a prettier state. there's a part of me that would not mind the whole knife looking that way.

buff it, paint it purple, call it bob

Normal or not (and it looks normal to me), it sounds like this was a free knife given to you by the designer himself......

......as my grandfather used to say (and I won't try and spell it with his German accent): "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

No no no

I was thinking of smoothing it out but put a patina on it and I love it now

I was just wondering if that was normal because I wanted to get the bk 24 and since they don't have a coating was wondering if they would be finished like that

I personally don't mind it I think it adds character to the knife ;) was also wondering if it was like that since it's a factory second which would be cool If I have something you guys don't lol :D like I said I really don't mind it at all I like it

I like it like it is. The rough texture matches the texture of my hands and makes it far less slippery.
Use it, abuse it and treat it like a Becker.

The BK24 I own had a rather smooth finish, textured but pretty smooth.

That is pretty normal..... As to why it is a second?..... Sometimes I can figure out why it was culled but, mostly I cannot...... Minor finishing flaw, perhaps..... Slightly off flat, perhaps..... No worries about heat treat sooooooo..... No worries....... E
