There is a red mark on one of the inlays on my small classic, I hadn't noticed it much before but looking at old pics it was there but didn't seem quite so bright

is it normal?

I think it's the normal wood color. TrueNorthKnives.com had a few birdseye maple Sebs for sale that had lots of reds in them. Kind of cool/original.
:)

I'm pretty sure it's normal, as mentioned TNN had some special inlays that where ALOT red.

One of the main attractions to birdseye maple is its variable color. Typically, the outer rings of the tree create pieces that have creamy, light amber colors with darker birdseye patterns. The inner rings, also called heartwood, might be deep amber or reddish with dark brown birdseye.

Most people don't know, but due to its rich quality and figurative, natural designs. . . .Rolls Royce dashboards are made of birdseye maple.

oh fair enough, my knife is box elder.

Box elder is a softer wooded member of the maple family and at times it's hard to tell the difference between the two. Both possess the same color patterns.

ETA: Notice the reddish streaks and tones in the two pics of Box Elder. . . .
