I just bought SAK classic sd and the blade was scratched like that.
And when I open the blade, I feel the knife touching the file, and the scratches get worse. If I open it gently, it won't scratch, but if I'm not careful, it scratches. Is this normal?

It is and it shouldn't be.

It's not supposed to happen. I've had plenty of classics in the past without this issue. In recent years it has become increasingly common to see factory new classics with this exact same file rubbing problem. I complained about it to Victorinox and they told me to send in for warranty. I never bothered. It's not worth the hassle.

I should probably also note that this is also seen on other models. As far as I know, the Ambassador has always had a similar issue with the end of its file scratching the knife. The Sportsman would be another example, and I think they made it worse when they changed the file texture. Also basically any model with 2 knife blades on the same layer, or a combo tool on the same layer as the knife, has a slight rubbing issue where the blades touch. It's usually not very bad and a lot of people actually never notice it.

Another thing to note: the Rambler/Manager has an outward facing file and therefore is immune to this problem. It also has a key ring on the opposite side of the knife blade so that it can't get in the way when you are using the knife.

Wow. Than you for the very detailed explanation. I'm thinking of buying Deluxe Tinker. I hope that model doesn't have the problem...

I have several SAKs what have some scratches on the main blades. Especially on my Alox Cadet. It‘s happened most often when the main blade is crinke, or bent, to allow room for the implement next to it. I’ve never had a blade that “grinded” against the other tool, unless I pressed too hard inward on that tool (for example, the file on the Cadet) when opening that tool. TBH, it really doesn’t bother me that much, as long as the blades and implements are not noticeably grinding against each other.

Victorinox QA is not what it used to be. I feel theres been a certain 'cutting of corners' with production is recent years.

I have experienced a little blade rub on the last two alox classics....but not with any of the 5 cellidor classics I have here.

I've taken enough of them apart to know that's what they are, a collection of manufacturing shortcuts.

They are the commodity of commodity knives, so they know exactly which shortcuts the average person will notice when they add it to their keyring. It's a bit like complaining that a budget box car doesn't have bently fit and finish. I'm not saying that you can't like perfection, but to trash a brand when it's not their focus, seems a little.... over the top, we'll say. Now, if they don't "snap" open or shut, then that's a problem that they actually care about.
