Hi, new member, just had a question I wanted to ask.
I live in NYC, and I recently purchased a SOG tsunami. It has a 6.5 inch blade, and is just under 11 inches long total.
Am I in the clear to carry this concealed?
Please, don't post links to knife expert, I can't understand what he writes.
Thanks to all for your help!

NYC (and basically the state of NY in general) has extremely strict (and unclear, in some cases) laws about any type of gun or knife on your person. That's why many knife and gun companies have suspended sales to that city or state. It also depends if the cop in question actually knows the ins and outs of the laws he/she has sworn to enforce. Some would nail you for a folding knife with a 3-inch blade, so I shudder to think what they would do about a 6.5-inch fixed tanto blade.

Best to err on the side of caution and not carry it. If you're serious about self-defense (they're not, which is why they have all those absurd laws), my advice would be to just get the hell out of the People's Republic of New York altogether.

Everything hadji said is spot on. You're best bet in NYC is a small slipjoint or friction folder. Be sure whatever you carry isnt visible at all and if you do get stopped, NEVER say the knife is for self defense.

In NYC, Distict Attorney Vance considers any locking knife an illegal "gravity knife"..

Can you think of a reason acceptable to a cop for why I would be carrying a knife?

I always use "I need it for work".

A lot of the time, it's even the honest-to-god reason I carry a knife. The rest of the time it still sounds good and it's pretty believable.

That works in Canada since we don't even need a valid reason to be carrying one. It's really not a good idea to be carrying a locking folder in New York City.

Some other posters on this forum have said that a single-edged fixed blade, with a blade under 4 inches is okay... at least better than a locking folder. Probably not a good idea to choose something tactical or weaponlike.

Most places in NY STATE, especially upstate, are OK with working knives, whether slipjoints, locking folders, or fixed blade hunting knives. NY CITY is not. The law in NYC says blades must be under 4" and must be carried concealed. If the clip is showing or the outline of the knife in your pocket is showing (printing) then you're busted.

Worse, the Manhattan DA has the police for all of the city enforcing his interpretation of "gravity knives". If the police can grip any part of the knife or blade and with a hard swing snap the blade open, and it locks in place, you're busted.

Best advice: a non-locking small Swiss Army Knife or other slipjoint. Fixed blades may pass one time, the next they'll call it a "dangerous weapon".

^^^Perfect answer here^^^
If you do carry a fixed blade though, make sure its not tactical looking.

I went to a gun show on Long Island yesterday, and went with a few active duty officers who work in Brooklyn. Of course we discussed knife law enforcement....It is as bad as ever in NYC. A few weeks back, another construction worker was arrested for carrying a flickable, locking knife right next to his tool belt. The guys with me, are sick of what they see, but it keeps getting worse......
