Is this old news ?

Sorta old. A few guys have posted about it, but it didn't gain a huge amount of traction. Most of these cheap fellas would probably rather save money by collecting belly button lint for tinder than go buy enough cord to replace all the little stashes they have hidden everywhere!

belly button lint isn't as easily accumulated LMAO!

"IF IT AIN'T BROKE..........." - and jute twine is very handy. Not to mention that buying 4 rolls to about one 3 foot section of firecord at the same cost....

Seems a bit gimmicky to me.

A firestarter cordage combo. You probably need both things simultaneously on the trail... Why combine them? Why spend time unraveling your cordage to get at your firestarter?

And yeah I'd rather use a free firestarter... who wouldn't. Birch bark ftw. :D

I like birch bark myself....but fat wood [and pine resin in general] is good too. Heck....i have enough Altoids cans....when one fire is started, char something for the next time you need it.

I've been known to search big 'ole pine trees for sap leaking from the bark. Limbs broken off or natural damage to the bark/tree allows it to leak out. Sometimes it will crystallize because it was an old 'wound' to the tree. Collect it, it's all flammable. Melt it all down into one large mass. Mix in dry grass, birch bark, jute twine, whatever.
