Is this one legal in NYC?

I was watching someone do some field dressing with a single edge push knife, similar to the Cold Steel Safekeeper III. The blade was short and as stated, single edge so they were able to choke up a bit on the blade almost using it as a caper. I was wondering, would this be legal to own in NYC and use upstate NY while hunting? Please keep in mind that this will only be carried while hunting with a valid license, NOT an EDC in the city.

Well, there is always the possibility that a NYPD cop, behind on his/her monthly arrest quota, will call it a "dangerous knife" and bust you for it, leading to an expensive court battle and you possibly emerging with a criminal record. That "possibility" is remote if you keep it locked up in your home where no visitors (or responding EMTs, firefighters, LE personnel) can see it in "plain view". For hunting, I prefer a traditional styled knife. More practical. The person doing the field dressing with a push-knife styled blade may have had a lot of experience with it. Whatever knives (or firearms) that you own in NYC should be kept locked up and out of sight at all times. You never know if a medical emergency (or some other emergency) will allow LEOs to end up legally present in your home.

if the leos see a knife or a clip in a pocket, you can get collared

I found out that the person was using the Outdoor Edge Game Skinner, not a typical push blade. The Game Skinner also has a gut hook on it. Made specifically for hunting. I can't imagine this being a big deal if transported to and from your hunting location.

If you live in NYC, I strongly suggest locking it up in your gun locker or gun safe with the rest of your firearms, ammunition and other knives. If the cops show up because of a medical emergency or some other legal reason to be in your home, you want them to see no guns or knives at all in plain view. Sorry, but that is life in NYC (and my own anti-gun, anti-self-defense state of Massachusetts!). Just be careful and keep everything locked up and out of sight and you should be OK.
