Is this one of Jerry's early pieces?

I've only ever seen Jerry do this style of knife. IMO, it doesn't really look like his work, but you can never be sure.
(Steel made to look like obsidian, looks used here.)

I doubt it. Jerry's "Obsidian" steel knives actually look like obsidian, that is more obviously something made of metal and merely loosely mimicking the real thing.

hopefully you did not buy it. I think a lot of people are buying those thinking that they are jerry's knives. But most are not, and don't be fooled, even the most experienced collectors have been fooled. I would email Jerry directly with the pic and ask him before buying it.

I got to handle one of Jerry's 'flint knap' knives. The blade actually looked knapped. Almost could not tell it was steel without touching. I actually thought it was flint when I first saw it. Had a bent antler handle. Sweet knife! :)

badmojo is still an excellent resource :D

jerry really piled on the black for the obsidian look. even the "fugliest" of his work still looks like decent working knives. the one shown, while I'm sure it took a lot of time and energy as an artistic endeavor (and may even have an excellent heat treatment applied to the blade), is less then pleasant looking.
