Is this right?

Just a few questions I have, mainly involving if these steps are right or not.

1. Lay out knife on a piece of 7-8 oz leather.
2. Trace image of knife while leaving around 3/8th of a inch space for the seam
3. Flip knife over and retrace it as well as any belt system
4. Mark the thread lines
5. Drill/punch holes through the marks
6. Dampen the center of leather
7 Fold it over until it meets the other edge
8. Begin the saddle stitch in about the 3rd hole (for backstitching)
9. Finish the stitch and begin backstiching
10. Tie knots in the end of the thread and place in hole
11. Trim/burnish edges
12. Apply finish/coating

Is this right? Seems that I'm missing a lot.

How are the seams added? They couldn't be added while the centerline is damped as that could interfere with the cement and if its not dampend, the leather could potentially start cracking.

At what point is carving/texturing/tooling done?

Isn't the knife also supposed to be form fitted with this type of sheath, at what step would that be done?

Assuming this is for a pouch style sheath, though this is not the way I do it I suspect this could work. I also suspect that you will run into troubles doing this.

I highly recommend Chuck Burrow's sheath making DVD. It will walk you through one method that works well. Then you can refine the steps on your own.

He begins by tracing onto a manilla folder. This way, you trace one side and fold the paper over and cut so it is symmetrical. The way you describe could have the sewing lines and holes not lining up properly.

With waxed thread you don't really need any knots.

Here's a link to a thread with a ton of links to online tutorials.
