Hi all

Decent bulk knifemaking steel is not easy to find in Australia but I have found some cold work tool steel that is 60mm wide and more than half an inch thick. The chemical composition is as follows

C 1,55
Si 0,25
Mn 0,35
Cr 11,80
Mo 0,80
V 0,95

Can obtain hardness of 63-65 max

Just not sure if it is suitable or not. It is known as Bohler k110 and is readily available to me at reasonable prices.

That is Bohler's version of D2. It will make a very good working knife with good edge holding.

I use it all the time. If you have access to it at a good price I'd jump on some right now. I love it:thumbup:

One more question.....if we were to ceracote these...can this steel handle the 300 degree F baking temp without damaging the temper like A2?

Yes, it is generally tempered higher than 400 F..

I'm just curious what the heck you're going to make out of stock greater than 1/2" thick, and why? That's a lot of grinding. You may find yourself spending an awful lot on belts.

That's the main steel that Bruce Merchant uses I believe. Full time maker down in Somerville Vic.

I have one of his knives and it holds a great edge. I like D2 to make knives with so I don't see a problem with it.

Thanks Galadduin

James - will be done on a cnc if it happens...one piece integral daggers most likely 👍
I don't know what the numbers are on the historical re enactors are down there but there is a market for rondel daggers and they need very thick stock. Just a marketing option.
