Hello,

I was just looking at eknifeworks.com and saw this S&W HRT Magnesium folder:

Knife

I was wondering if this was the same one designed by Darrell Ralph a few years ago. That one seemed to get pretty good reviews, especially for its price point. I had read, however, that if Ralph ever thought the quality dipped below a certain point he'd make sure his name was taken off all advertising for the knife, and this doesn't mention him by name. Not sure if that is a good sign, but for $9 I might be willing to chance it.

Would you trust your fingers to a $9 linerlock? 440C in this case could poorly heat treated Chinese 400 series stainless.

Actually it would only say 440 if it was anything but 440C. Also 440C has been used for so long it is well known how to heat treat it.

The knife sold for 60 dollars retail. There is no markings on it as to where it was made. Its a great deal on closeout at 9 dollars. It comes razor sharp locks up great. The handle is strong. Somebody gave me one for a present a few years ago and its not at all a bad knife. Nothing like a BM or Spydie but i like the design and the way it flips out fast. If the one you are looking at is the S&W and not an even cheaper knockoff for 9 bucks get it. I know SMKW was closing them out at that a few months ago. (Ok clicked the link missed it the first time it is the S&W one)

Got mine out to have a look. Its got great handle to blade ratio (blade near as long as the handle) Locks up with zero play, Open back with stainless spacers, dual thumb studs that serve as blade stop. Marked S&W performance center, roc, 440c, Magnesium handles with dual stainless inlaided, liners. I think the papers with mine said it was 58roc. For 9 dollars on closeout its a steal. I think the retail was more like 70 instead of 60. Was sold at discount for just over 40. SMKW commonly buys large lots of CRTK and other brands that have been discontinued and you see them at very low prices.

In fact Looking at the SMKW site I only came across the same knife with a plain edge for just under 55!

O got one for like $8.00 from them. I thought for sure it would be great for that price. It is total crap. Liner lock is very flimsy, knife is small and uncomfortable. Very hard to open. You are better off buying anything else.

Lol, sure it is. Its just over 8" open the blade nearly 3-3/4" long the handle 4-1/2", The handle is rather small as far as bulk but thats a good thing if you want to pocket carry. Solid lock up and flips out with the back flipper fast as any with my index finger.(the thumb studs are for a blade stop) Very flimsy? If I try to move the blade in any direction when open I feel zero play. Its nothing great but its a heck of a knife for 9 bucks. Lot better than what you find for that generally. Doesn't even look like a knife that would go for that to me. (it is a copy of a custom folder by Ralph or was designed for S&W by him) If you do a search here on S&W hrt you will see where most people think S&W knives are for the most part junk, but the HRT line is pretty good for the money.

This knife is made for hands that are on the smaller side of medium size. I can use mine, but it's just more compact than I prefer for an EDC. I have medium size hands on the larger side of medium. It would be great except that bit of a hawkbill on the end of the handle. My little finger rides uncomfortably on it.

Mine also locks up solid with no blade play or lock failure on applying some torque to the blade. Not bad for a close-out buy of $9.00. If it fits your hands okay, it'd be a good tackle or tool box knife if you didn't want to EDC it.

I bought several of the HRT series after hearing DDR was keeping Taylor Cutlery honest on the specs for the knives he designed. Have been fairly pleased with them in general. YMMV...

this might be a stupid question but does anyone know the easiest way to browse eknifeworks.com? It takes a long time looking through their list of knives. I cant seem to shop by brand. Is that not an option? Thanks for the help. sorry for the dumb q.

There's no dumb questions, just dumb answers. I have had luck there typing in the brand in the search. For example I typed in Gerber it brought all products by Gerber up. (I know it doesn't always bring up anything at all) But you can go to types of knives and narrow it down a bit. That site just has 1000's of products instead of the 100's most do, so it can be a little hard to find what you are looking for.

Thanks Jill Jackson,

I was hoping I wasn't the only one that has trouble with the site. Thanks for the help. I guess I'll just mess around with it a little and figure things out.

Thanks again
Mike

I really like Darrel Ralph's designs, but I would get a 20$ Byrd before I get a 10$ DDR design.

If you want something he designed, get some Camillus.

Its not really a 10 design it is retail 70 and the plain edge is 54 and change right now at SMKW. But there was some combo edge offered on closeout there at 8.99.
