Is This What Celluloid Out Gassing Looks Like?

I think this is a celluloid handled knife.
If so, is this what out gassing looks like? From what I've read there isn't anything I can do about it except maybe remove the scales.

It's a Richartz Bros & Sons.

The blades look like it's gassing and the cell looks like it's breaking down into "crystals" which will crumble. The only thing to do is take the scales off. Make sure to keep the knife away from other carbon steel knives.

Best regards

That would be my guess. Polymers exposed to direct sunlight often do this, it's what causes that film on the insides of windshields without a dash cover. Another possibility is harsh chemicals.

Was this knife exposed to sunlight or chemicals?

Thank You Robin for the Information!!

A very interesting read.

I think I'll peel the scales off the knife in order to save the innards.

I'm not sure what I'd do with them, but who knows.

Happy to help Ken. There are a few guys on the forum who can replace the scales for you. IF you can get the scales off in one piece you can make a pattern for the scales. I have done a couple of rescales without taking the knife apart by getting the holes perfectly drilled in an over size piece and sliding them over the pins and gluing them. It's a bit of a cheat but it works. Save the sheild ;-))You might consider oiling the metal parts with light mineral oil and wiping them down with a soft cloth. It looks like the pen blade has some active rust on it.

Robin
