Hi,

I just joined the forum. I am upgrading my EDC from a Gerber PR 3.0 to a Kershaw Skyline partly based on things I have read here. The Skyline should arrive any day.

Other advice - what's a good sub-$100 intro to s30v - I have been looking at the Gerber Freeman Stag. Is that a good hunting/outdoors knife

Also, what would be a good survival, do anything, split kindling, then chop carrots for stew, then kill a zombie kinda' thing for under $100? Is an ESEE model a good choice, or are there other options out there for perhaps a bit less money?

Thanks,

Jon

Buck vantage pro for s30v is a good choice. For the survival blades look at the becker models, bk5/7/9.

some benchmade and spyderco s30v's can be found for under $100 if you do some hunting, and ESEE is a great choice for a survival blade. Also, maybe look around the exchange forum. odds are a few s30v's pop up for less than $100

I have the Gerber Freeman with S30V and Cocobolo and I'm in love with it. I have plenty of hunting knives to choose from and it's the only one I've wanted to use since I bought it three years ago. I touch it up after using it but have never noticed it becoming even slightly dull. I'm a fan.

Dude. Look for the ZT line secondhand... most of them are in S30V and I guarantee you you won't be disappointed. I got one secondhand that had been used for two years and it cut better than my AUS8s

The cheap good ways to get S30V are the Spyderco Native and Buck Vantage Pro. The Kershaw G10 Leek is also a great option for a little more.

That's the second vote for the Vantage Pro. It's not a sexy knife, but it looks like a great deal, and a very utilitarian design. I think I will pick one up, and yes, I have been drooling over the Leek G10, but it's out of my range for now.

What's the ZT line? Who makes them? Sorry for being an idiot ;P

Wow, that's quite an endorsement, but I am still on the fence about it given the mixed reviews I have read.

Thanks! I'll look at the beckers!

Welcome!! Check out the Spyderco Manix 2. Great knife, but be warned, this is an addiction and a sickness. Once you start buying nicer knives, there will be no turning back! Enjoy your Skyline, I have one and it's great, you'll love it.

Side note on the Skyline: don't try to open it with the thumb stud. It's not meant for that, it's a flipper knife.

the spyderco native is an affordable s30v knife.

ZT is Zero Tolerance, a line of high performance knives made by Kershaw. ZT knives are known for being overbuilt.

There's a member who sells factory seconds in the Exchange here. He has some really great deals, and the 'blemished' model I bought from him looked so good I can't trughfully tell you what the flaw is that caused it to be culled.

I have also bought blems, and there are always "problems" with them. those problems are almost always that the coating got messed up in one spot, therefore making the knife unsellable as new. My ZT 0200, which is an absolute beast of a knife, has the coating one shade lighter in a circle that is about 1/8 of an inch in diameter. this took about 45 dollars off a 130 dollar knife.

tldr: blems are awesome. a S30V leek would be excellent. $45. just search for kershawguy.

For the sub-$100 S30V recommendation, I'd suggest the Spyderco Sage I.

The ESEE RC-6 would be my recommendation for the survival knife.
