To those out there who use your edc for cutting food and such, is Tuf-Glide/Militec edible/harmful? What do you use to protect your knives? I use TG but am then hesitant to cut any food with it cause who knows what you'ld be eating.
Just wondering.

most of militec is mineral spirits... the same stuff to clean off paint and stuff. After it dries, or in tiny, tiny amounts, it's pretty much harmless... take a sip though, and I'd say that you'll feel pretty bad.

Eesox is edible, Miltec isn't
I don't really care, I just give it a good wiping off,
and use it anyway.

I use food safe mineral oil. You can buy them at home stores for about $4 for a 12 ounce bottle. Mineral oil is widely used to condition wood cutting boards. I have a knife with an unfinished wood handle and I use mineral oils on the handle and blade. It is safe to use on knives that will cut food and also it will not go rancid unlike vegetable based oils.

does mineral oil dry on the blade or does it stay oily like 3 in one oil?

i currently use 3 in 1 but hate how dirt and everything sticks to it :grumpy:

i was thinking tuf glide because i heard it dries and leaves a protective layer, does mineral oil do the same?

No.

It's more for frequent use or storage. It makes a great cleaner/protective oil for a knife that cuts food.

The militec and tuff glide are more for protecting a working knife from moisture and whatnot. I use militec in the pivot and clean with mineral oil.

I wipe the mineral oil off but leave a thin layer, enough that the blade feels lubed but not wet.

so if i plan to EDC a high carbon steell blade should i just clean and coat it with mineral oil every night?

If the blade will come into frequent contact with food then mineral oil is probably a good choice.

No, just keep it wiped clean after use and inspect it for a while to learn what it needs. High carbon steel can develop a patina, a darkening, especially from cutting acidic foods, and this patina is a protection, too.

I keep a bottle of food grade mineral oil on the kitchen counter, and the high carbon knives I use get washed and carefully wiped off every time I use them. But I don't necessarily oil them every time. When I do, I just slip them into their leather sheaths slightly oily.

Remember this about any protectant you use -- using the knife does tend to rub it off! Some of them are said to bond with the metal. Depending on use, I wouldn't trust that. After heavy use, wipe them off. When you get home, oil them. Knives I use for cutting vegetation I wipe down with alcohol, which cleans off the sap nicely. You can soap and water them, though.

Tuf-Glide goes great on hotdogs with some onions and mustard.

A few years ago when I was setting up my account with Mark Mrozek (Tuf-Cloth, glide, etc.) I asked him the same question. What he told me was that it was safe to use on food cutlery but because of the huge cost of getting it FDA approved and the small contingency of people who he thought would use it on kitchen cutlery, he decided to opt not to go through the process. I, however, use the stuff on all my kitchen cutlery and I have not grown any flippers yet!
Hope this helps.

My wife won't let me open a bottle of Hoppe's in the house - what is it with women??

I love the smell of Hoppe's #9 in the morning -- it smells like, like, Victory! Victory with pheasants, deer, rabbits, etc.

It's funny how certain smells can trigger memories. I used to devour my Randall Knives catalog in the rest room at work. There was a certain flavor of air freshener in there. Now, evertime I go in there, that first breath of air makes me think of the first Randall I bought -- a M #16.

I made the stupid mistake of cutting some food once with a knife I had wiped down with gun oil. I spit the first bite out and found a clean knife, that stuff tastes awful. Everything near me comes into contact with food sooner or later....so that mineral oil is a good tip.
