I received my CF Chaparral in the mail last week. It was actually the first knife I considered for EDC, long before EDC was even a thing/term, but I chose a DF2 instead. I decided recently to wind down the knife collecting for a while to concentrate on other things, but I thought it'd be cool to kinda come 'full circle' and pick up a Chaparral (along with a few others I'd been holding off on) as a 'period' to my knife collecting 'sentence'.

Anyway, fit and finish (as is usually the case with anything Spyderco from Taichung) is pretty much perfect. There are two characteristics that I'm wondering about though; it's been a long time since I've handled a Chaparral...

First, and least concerning to me, is a little bit of 'grittiness' or a faint 'grinding' noise during opening. Its very similar to, if not exactly the same as what Dan mentioned in his (blade)review...around the 6:50 mark:

Secondly, and more concerning is my examples action on the back lock. It sure is stiff. I wouldn't call it ridiculous, but it's every bit as painful to close IMO as my also new Gayle Bradley, different lock types notwithstanding.

Now, I know its a brand new knife and I haven't applied any sort of lube. I just wanted to get opinions/information in order to form a plan of action (ie. break-in, lube, return and try another).

Thanks guys.

the back lock will break in, Ive had 6 chaparrals and all were the same. The grittiness is the writing on the blade hitting the liners. Tighten the pivot just a TAD and it will be noise free

My cf Chaparral has seen regular office carry for over 2 years. It had the same gritty feel and stiff lock you describe.

Once it broke in it has been fine. I just lube it every once in a while.
