Howdy all, I recently got my first spyder and I was wondering if it was ok to oil my knife with wd-40. Thanks.

Not really. WD-40 (WD=water displacement) isn't really for lubrication. People use it more for blasting the gunk out of their folder's piviots.

If you use WD-40 as your primary lube, it will quickly dry and may also allow for corrosion. You'd be better off useing a 3-in-1 oil, sewing machine oil, or a gun oil.

You can also try White Lightning or Tuff-Glide. Or a little bit of food grade mineral oil, but that's messy and will pick up lint.

Yeah, WD-40 isn't really a lube, it's a cleaner or an un-sticker. If you need to get grit and gunk out of your pivot, WD-40 is OK to use, but blast it out again with canned air and then lube it with proper lube. I use Tuf-Glide on my plastic handled Sydercos with great results. If you have a higher-end knife, or one with metal handles, Militec-1 would be my reccomendation, but really, almost any true metal lube works fine. Before I used Militech and Tuf-Glide, I was using a teflon based grease that was actually intended for food service equipment (a bit thick, but smoooooth) and a bike chain lube called Tri Flow (also teflon based I think, or maybe silicon).

WD-40 was one of the best rust preventatives in my daughter's science fair project last year compared to a lot more expensive oils and greases and waxes. It and generic petroleum jelly were two of the best.We didn't test for "slickness" though, and I would want to run the test over again before I said it was for sure better than another product.

WD-40 for blasting....then Rem Oil.

If a lot of WD residue is left....it can gum things up.

10-W30 works good on most folders but if it is larger heavy duty type folder you might want to use a 40 weight oil. :)
