i've been waiting to buy a 360. are the new ones now safe to buy now?

have they fixed the overheating problems?

thanks.............Bill

The newer ones are better, but still not exempt from the issues. I say buy one from Best Buy and get their 2yr warranty for peace of mind. Anything happens, walk in and get a brand new one for two years no questions asked.

If you don't want to pay for a Best Buy 2 yr warranty, Microsoft has upped their warranty on the 3 flashing red lights (overheating) to 3 years. They even cover the UPS 3 day express both ways. Pretty quick turnaround, too.

If you purchase a 360, I would highly recommend an external cooling device. Either one that clips onto the back, or the bottom (calling it the bottom if the unit is vertical). I use the Nyko intercooler. At the expense of a little extra noise, it does keep the machine cooler.

The problem isn't always that it overheats. From what I've read, most times it's the tension on the backplate of the motherboard that causes solder to break free on the RAM or something. There are all kinds of fixes for it, one including taping pennies to the RAM, and supposedly it works.

If it's going to die, it's going to die with or without the intercooler on it.

They have the falcon chipset now which reduces heat.

This is how you make sure you buy a 360 with the falcon chipset.

How to find a Falcon model 360 in stores

Based on the info in this thread, A Falcon model Xbox 360 MUST BE:

1. Lot #0734 (Halo 3) or later (all SKUs)
2. Manufactured on or after 8/24/07(An HDMI Premium manufactured on 8/19 has been reported as 65nm.)
3. Team FDOU (Other teams may be Falcon as well, but none have been reported)
