Is Zylan(BM-BT2) toxic like Teflon for food prep?

I decapitate a lot of fish while cleaning them instead of filleting during camping trips. I was wondering about the BM710HS AXIS M2 STEEL (PLAIN) and how cutting through a fish as thick as my forearm would affect the finish. I could get the normal finish but I dig the black, any thoughts?

Unless the finish visibly flakes off into the fish I would not worry about it. I would also highly doubt that Benchmade would risk the liability of using a toxic finish on their knives. Look and see if any warnings came with the knife regarding your concerns. Even easier contact them at http://www.benchmade.com/.

Teflon is not toxic to animals. Some of the chemicals given off during manufacture are.

Zylan coatings are used on cooking utensils. Toxicity should not be a problem.

But I don't think I would use M2 steel for cleaning fish. Even though the blade is coated, the edge would not be, so it would be subject to corrosion. I think you would be better served by a stainless blade. Just a thought.

I was warned by a knife seller not to use black powdered knives to cut food with.

Once, I actually used my black KA-BAR to decapitate fish for our family Christmas dinner.

However, I am still unaware of the possible danger of this black powdered finish of the KA-BAR knives and several other blade surfaces.

I would be more than happy if someone could tell me which blade surfaces or finishes are safe and adequate for food and which are dangerous for our health (toxic).

For instance:
The black finishes on knives (teflon, black powder... I cant think of more).
Or the various stainless steel finishes (bead blast, stone wash, satin...).

Thank you in advance.

By black powder do you mean baked on Epoxy?

You can e-mail the individual knife companies to get answers. Companies in the US ( and likely the EU) keep documentation on toxic and flammable items, where they are stored ( regs about that too) etc. Why a stainless steel satin finished for instance would be toxic is beyond me. The workers are protected from dust while grinding steel but that isn't what you want to know. So, write the knife companies to satisfy yourself.

Thanks for the answer Mastiff. As far as the black powder finish goes, I am just using the terminology used by the KA-BAR manufacturer on their black knife products. I am not a metallurgist, so I am not sure what is the specific chemical composition on their particular coating.

I guess all the stainless steel finishes, such as satin, bead blast and stone wash are all safe.

Satin, bead blast and stone wash are, to the best of my knowledge, finish textures, not coatings added to the metal surface. I don't care for blade coatings myself for appearance reasons, not any particular concern of toxicity.
