I've been sitting here wanting a particular knife, but not wanting to pay what it would take to have one made to my specs.

Decide "then gosh-durn-it, I'll learn to make it myself", start looking for someplace to learn. Apparently the best school is a bit more than two hours from where I grew up in South Arkansas. Now's it's likely 13 hours away by car.

(sigh)

I guess timing is everything :)

Hi 45-70:

Have you poked around over on knifekits.com forum? You might be able to find what you need there. Ed Cafferty might be worth and e-mail.

Our own Sarge grinds knives and may be able to help you.

45/70; people are learning to make knives all around you. You don't need the school close to your former home.

What kind of knife is it you want to make? If I can't be of any assistance to you, there's others around here who can.

45-70...I CAN appreciate the irony of your situation...:D

Grab some files and a grinder and have at it...after a couple dozen you will probably be able to make a workable knife..

OR

Find a custom maker that likes to trade...you would be surprised how many will be willing to trade a knife for something...

45-70,

I know I'm a grasshopper, and my knives aren't professional quality yet, but they have all been servicable and a joy to cut with. Really rewarding projects too. Between this place and the makers section there aint nothing you can't learn right here. Quality folks too. I'd love to see pics of your knives someday. I think the sheath making is more complex and skill heavy than the blademaking, personally. (I guess it shows in my work too. LOL) Really though, that Sarge feller is one hellofa teacher. Have you seen RWS's first few tries. Awesome stuff. Steve Poll is great too. Plus the guys in the makers section are quality folk too. Learning to make knives is the easy part, its getting time to do the work that is the stinker. LOL. Start firing the questions bro, it makes for hella fun threads.

Guy's,

Thank you all.

What I want is a sheffield bowie blade with a coffin handle. Too long to be useful in the modern world, 10-11 inch blade and a dark coffin handle. While there are sheffield's out there, often they come with the 1/2 horse 1/2 alligator, but certainly 1/2 metal grips. Carbon steel blade.

Windlass makes one, blade shape is great, the handle and length isn't what I want.

probably what I'll end up doing is getting the Solingen steel Cumberland and Natchez blades and handling them myself. Most of you will recall that it seems I go through a bowie phase each spring :)

I thought I had someone lined up to produce one at another forum, but it likes like a not now.

So a large blade, particular style of the blade, and of the grip...

Sorry will have to finish in a bit, the three year old requires urgent attention.

Putting your own handle on a purchased blade is how most people get started into knifemaking, nothing wrong with that at all. If nothing else, working with production blades gives you an opportunity to study the design, and see if that style of knife is right for you. Git 'r done, and post pics.

A thought 45-70. It doesn't have to be useful or practical in this modern world, as such. You just have to have fun working on it and then it will give you pleasure just to look at and hold what you made.

I enjoy handling what I make (finish the blades is more accurate) and looking at them. Heck, I just enjoy it.

This forum is a terrific place. Nice guys that always help and encourage.

Your bowie project sounds like a good one. You might even make a display stand to show it off or mount it on a favorite wall.

So, ask away!

I have a 12" file (already tapered spine-to-edge, just needs a point), brass/steel (for guard) and block of wood. Shoot me an Email and it's yours for the cost of shipping.

I said the same thing about a year ago. Being the man of action that I am, I went down to the shipping department and got myself some of the metal bailing strips for pallets and some tape. I made myself a fine shiv. :D

I can put my knowledge on video and share it with the world.

Shivmaking for Jailbait now available on Betamax.

How come there isn't a Shiv Forum here in Bladeforums? That seems like a glaring omission.

you can make a fine bowie out of a tin can and a few popsicle sticks. here's one of mine i made earlier:

That looks like a steak knife at the place settings for the table dining on Wooly Mamoth.

Gotta love those Chen bowies.

Been asking for a review on the knife review forum on just that item.
