Are there any of you fine fire, forge and file folks in Hawaii? Or how about around the Tarzana, California area? I'm gunna be there in June with family. It'd be GREAT to connect with some folks then. Maybe round up some stuff I could pallet up and freight over to Hawaii too.

(attempted edit of topic title to alleviate impertinent humor impulses)

I am sure there are knifemakers in HI, Phil. I have sold tappers to some of them. Heck, don't that Onion fella live in HI? :p

Hey there. It's always nice to have a friend living in Hawaii, since I love Kona coffee! ;) :)

That's exactly where I'm at, Kona. The coffee here sure goes for a premium, frequently over $20 per pound roasted!

Don't know who the Onion guy is. Tom Mayo's on Oahu. I'll be on that island next month. He's a pretty well known stock removal guy. Maybe he'd have a moment for a lost soul.

How about sounthern CA, Los Angeles area? I'll be in Tarzana in the San Fernando Valley in June.

I'd never heard of Ken Onion untill I found my table at the Vegas Show right next to his. His knives are so popular when he does shows that he does a raffle and the winner's get a chance to buy one of his knives. Pay $800. for it and turn around and sell it for 3 times that or more in a couple minutes. Here's a link to his web page: http://www.kenonionknives.com/

I'm not a bang & clang guy, just a lowly stock removal hobby maker, but I'm only about a half hour drive from Tarzana.

My youngest kid is living on Kauai, but he's 26 and spends all his spare time surfing and chasing the attainable around the beach.

I've looked up both Tom Mayo and Ken Onion on the web. No email addresses. Guess I'll have to phone them. They're both on Oahu. Haven't been to Kauai in ages.

John, I could make it to Simi Valley. You game for a visit?

Quite possibly. Send me an email with your ideas as to timing. Being a hobby guy, I've got to schedule shop time around my day job, and my day job is a time bandit. But it's always fun to hang out with another knifemaker.

If you get a chance to hang out with Ken Onion or Tom Mayo, you'll be hanging with some top shelf knifemakers. Both have managed to creat impressive reputations and build some awesome knives. My Mayo TNT is she best folder I own. I can't afford an Onion, but I've held a couple. Ken's knives are awesome too. Both maker have managed to create a distinctive style. I don't think Tom hangs out here on Blade Forums muchanymore, but he's certainly active on a couple online forums.

Tell us more about yourself?

John, Thanks! We'll be there in June. I'll PM you with details to see if we can work something out around busy schedules!

Funny... I was reading a knifemaking book while having blood taken the other day. The guy sticking me with the needle sees the book and tells me about a friend of his on Oahu who makes knives, Tom Mayo, and I should look him up on the web.

If I did this right, here's a link to an earlier post with a bit of intro info.

Yep, I'm on the Big Island.

Okay, now I have three big time knifemakers on Oahu I'll try and phone.

Know anyone on the the Big Island???

I don't think that there is anyone on the big island doing that anymore. I get over there several times a year though.

Not only are there the 3 big time makers, (Stan, Ken and Tom) but there are several small time guys (like me) and a few real up and commers.

Drop me an e mail if I can help out. If I can't I can probably point you to someone that can! :)
