Well, today is the 58th birthday of the State of Israel (by the Hebrew calendar).

Happy birthday--and it seemed appropriate to tell you folks at BladeForums that we will be moving there in December or so. I have been offered a job there, after 13 years that I have been living in the US. I am a scientist--and my work involoves both research and teaching. These kinds of positions do not open up very often in a country the size of Israel. My daughters are now 3 years old, and it will be a good time for them to move. My wife has never lived there, so she is just a little nervous.:D Not because of security issues--she has visited there many times and knows the score--but because of economic issues. Let us just say that I will take a bit of a salary cut. (There is an old joke--how do you make a small fortune in Israel? Go there with a large fortune.)

So I am now in the process of moving my laboratory and winding up a few projects here (others will continue, as I will retain a position here). Because of these and other complications, I will have to forego the Blade show this year. Can't have everything.

We hope to see y'all over there. :D

Congrats man  I met my wife in Israel so it will always be a special place for us.

Where you moving to, Haifa?

Well, we don't really know where we will live.

The current plan is to eventually buy a place in a small town called Modi'in, about midway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. I will be working in the Tel Aviv area.

Since this is a really big move for my wife, I thought that she should choose where we live the first year (we will rent during that time). She is most comfortable in Jerusalem, and has many relatives there. So we may end up there the first year. It also depends on where she finds a job. She will be going in the late autumn to interview.

Where exactly did you meet your wife, NV?

Happy birthday, Israel, and congratulations to you, too, Shaldag! My mom has a friend who lived in Israel for over a decade and absolutely loved it. She said she'd never want to raise kids in the US again after having done so in Israel.

Shaldag,
I met my wife in 1993 on Kibbutz Ba'ram (near Zafat).

I was so in love at the time that I dropped everything and moved to Sweden two years later. :D .

So, at the great risk of getting this thread moved out of Community by mentioning the K-word, what does the k*ife collection scene look like in Israel? Are there many Israelie custom k*ife makers? Are there any good k*ife shows?

This thread reminded me of our friend Blilious. I wish him and his family peace.

I know (from discussions with makers) that there are a few collectors in Israel.

One well-known guy is Dr. David Darom, who has published a number of nice books on knives. I have actually known him for a number of years.

I have never seen a knife show in Israel. One thing that seems to be gaining in popularity in Europe are these little mini-shows, lasting about a day. I wonder how easy it would be to start one up there.

I figure this thread will eventually get moved. Something about Israel....it could go to a knives forum, political, or whine & cheese.......:D

In the past, I've had many requests from people in Israel for information on making them, before all the internet forums dealing with the same thing came about.

I forget that the distance between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv is about the same as I drove for a doctor's appointment in Sacramento the other day.

Congratulations on the move and new job, and happy birthday, Israel.

"Peace is patriotic as long as no one is trying to kill us" sounds like a good Israeli motto.

Shaldag,

Modi'in is a good old name, even if Maccabi means sports now more than soldier. :)

Congratulations on your move.

Wellll,
a few friends have called to say "you're moving to Israel at a time like this?!?

I reply that in Israel, it's ALWAYS a time like this.

The distance from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv is about 70 km, if I recall correctly. The major factor in the commute is traffic. You cna time it to arrive in Tel Aviv at 7 am, or at 9 am--but not at 8 am. And then there is the price of gas, which I believe is 3-4 times that in the US. Oh well. Every place has advantages and disadvantages.

Esav-
I spent a full day scouting out possible sites for apartments in Modi'in, which is a town still very much under construction. The most attractive neighborhood is within walking distance (and overlooks) a Hasmonean tel (archeological site)--of which there are many in the area.
I look forward to many nice walks.

Ack! I was going based on the first Google hit, which said 35km. More like 35mi, being charitable. Some other sources place them 58 or 63km apart. Like Mountain View to San Francisco. Yikes!

Well, we want to hear all about it once you arrive. You can be just as present here, but living 5000 miles away. I hope so!

Best to you and your fine family.
