A couple of weeks ago I started a thread regarding metal filings/shavings in the pivot of my new Case Medium Stockman. I received answers that I expected and had planned to fix the problem as soon as I got my hands on some oil (I'm at school and will be for several more weeks).

In the meantime though, I have opened and closed the main blade so much (in attempt to free the shavings) that I fear they have worn out the lock. The main blade no longer snaps open or closed and can now be opened with the slightest bit of pressure. I don't even have to use the nail nick. Also when closing, I have to push the blade all the way down because it will not snap shut. I realize that over time the lock will wear out on its own but the knife is brand new and has never been used. When the main blade is open there is absolutely zero retention. Also the blade does not open all the way. If I open the blade as if I were to use it, there is still room in front of the lock for me to push the blade back against it. If I let go, the blade moves down again. The space between the blade and lock is significant enough that I can clearly see it.

What do you guys recommend I do? Should I just shut up because the lock strength will wear out eventually anyway? Should I send it back to Case?

Send it to Case with an explanation of it's trials and tribulations from the get go.

Opening and closing it repeatedly with shavings or compound in the joint, and NO OIL?????
That's like running a new car with no oil!!!

Thanks, I wasn't sure if what the knife (after what it went through) was still a warranty candidate.

I'd bet they'd want you to be happy,no matter what the story was.

Case has an excellent reputation for keeping their customers happy. Send it to them and let them make it right.

I have quite a few Case knives myself, and have never experienced the difficulties you've described. This is abnormal in the extreme. I'd be shocked if Case didn't bend over backwards to fix it, either by repairing or replacement, whatever it takes.

Lock?

I still think it's worth flushing out with copious amounts of WD40 and then washing and oiling the joints. However, sending it back to Case with a nice letter and asking for help is not a bad option either.
