I just received my new 2x72 grinder, motor/vfd and a metal framed grinder stand from Origin Blade Maker. I go to build the stand and find only the parts (which are high quality materials) and find only the parts, a bag of nuts/bolts/washers and thats it. No instructions. I email them and get an immediate reply saying that they do not include instructions and that in 5 years they have never had an issue. They did link a video to some guy building the stand but it is not an instructional video. I watched it and looked at the pictures on their website and still had issues building it. Parts didnt line up properly. I am a mechanically minded person but this was not intuitive. After sending them pics of my issues they were pointing out that a part was backwards or upside down. The parts are not labeled nor are any directions such as up, top, front, back etc labeled on them.

My issue is that they did include instructions for the grinder but no instructions on how to assemble the stand. And my emails, while responded to very quickly, were somewhat helpful but the responses were like I was an idiot for not knowing how to assemble the item.

Is it reasonable to expect instructions on how to build/assemble something or is it acceptable for the company to expect you to figure it out on your own?

anything you buy that requires assembly should have instructions with it. period. thats just lazy of the company to not include it in my view. I don't care how easy of assembly something is, or how straight forward the company thinks it is to accomplish. It's just common sense to do so. even chinese made products come with assembly instruction, usually they suck and dont help, but at least the effort was made lol

Pure laziness, they have a video camera and could easily post video on assembly for their customers

The video they sent me was not an instructional or assembly video. It was a guy who bought the stand and was putting it together. By stopping the video and looking closely I could determine which way the pieces are to go.There was no voice over describing the assembly, etc.

I don't suppose they included an inventory list so that you could determine you were not missing any parts either. I hope you were able to complete the assembly and the belt grinder is working properly and meets your expectations.

Nope, no inventory list either. Just the parts and a bag with the bolts, nuts and washers. They did separate the bolts, washers and nuts into separate compartments and they did label the bag with the bolts to secure the grinder and motor to the stand.

Update

So, I managed to figure out how to get the stand assembled. I got al the pieces in place and just have to tighten the nuts. When I tighten the nuts, 3 bolts sheared off. This was using just a regular ratchet and not even all that much force. They were barely tightened. Heck, my 12 year old daughter was tightening one for me when it sheared off. I contacted them via email and sent them pics of the bolts in which you can see the defects. They are casted and a poor casting at that. Well they replied that they sell 1000's of these stands and have never had a problem. Also they asked how much force did I use and did I tighten the nuts 1/2 turn or a full turn or more past the point when the snap washer closed. They also said they took a sample of the bolts and could not get them to break. Well, if the bolts needed to be only tightened to a specific torgue setting, that should have been included in the instructions. Oh, wait.....THERE WERE NO INSTRUCTIONS.

I got to the local home repair store and replace the bolts and get it assembled. The whole set up included the stand, grinder and motor/vfd. I get the grinder on top of the stand and then have to file out the bolt holes because they never occluded the holes when powder coating. I get it bolted down finally and bolt on the motor. The stand has predrilled holes for the grinder and slots for the motor. Well I can not slide the motor over far enough because the case of the motor hits the grinder and I can not get the drive wheel to line up with the grinder wheels. So when I put a belt on the grinder, the belt is about 1/4 way off the edge of the drive wheel.

I am waiting to hear back from OBM to see what they say now.

Do you have some pics of your assembly? It seems strange that if you bought everything from OBM that it wouldn't fit together just right. I wonder if you have something in the wrong position?
