Hello, just got in my first Khukuri from HI today. I've always heard how nice and well finished these knifes are which concerns me about some things I've noticed about mine.

The biggest perhaps being the cracks in the horn handle. I've counted 4, one of which seems like it could effect the integrity of it of the handle.

The other big thing is the tapering on the full tang handle is inconsistant and on the front side of the handle where the brass bolster ends and the horn scales begin, the thickness of the blade is actually relatively thin, then it gets thicker as you look down the handle towards the butt except for the very end it gets a bit thinner again.

Are these commen occurrences?

I wish I could figure out how to upload photos, I gladly will if someone could educate me. (First time using this site)

Did you buy it through this site(if so link the thread) or directly through HI website? Then we will know what you are working with and can discuss further.

Did you buy this as a Blem? If it is a Blem then it would be normal to have some cracks in the handle and in most cases you can epoxy it and it will last many years. If not a Blem then you can contact HI and they will take care of you.

As for the tapering of the tang, that is done to balance the blade and is normal. You may have more or less tapering as the Kami determines is needed to balance the weight of the blade, but I have never seen one that is a uniform thickness from bolster to butt cap. Having a thick tang would bring too much weight into the handle, which in a kukri would be undesirable.

Hope you enjoy it and if you have any questions call or email HI and you will get a quick response.

It shouldnt have been a blem, I paid 230 I think for it and I bought it directly through the HI site. I dont like being picky but since I plan to take this on some longer treks I dont want to take any chances with a broken scale. Yangdu gladly said they would send me a different one.

Thank you all for the responses and I'll let you know how the new one looks.

No worries, if you ordered through the site it should not be a blem.
Given the opportunity she will make it right.

I gave up on the horn handles with my kukris... they look nice and traditional in a way, but wood seems to have less issues with the cracking, and are easier to maintain with oil.
