Issues with new Mini A-100

Hi guys,
I just bought my first Emerson, the Mini A-100. The blade is centered, the lockup is excellent, BUT there's a couple problems. Both sides of the handle are not lined up with each other, so much so that when I set the knife down on a flat surface, it sits at an obvious angle. Please see the pics below:

Also, after handling the knife for a few days, I decided to wipe the blade down with a clean cotton rag to remove my fingerprints. In doing so, a good portion of the "wording" on the logo came off. Is this normal?

What do you guys think? I wasn't expecting the knife to be PERFECT, but I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the fit and finish. Do I have a legit complaint and should I send the knife in to get it fixed? Or is this par for the course with a production Emerson knife?

You should most definitely send that knife in. It doesn't even look like the liners are the same size in your picture. Sometimes you can readjust the knife by taking it apart and putting it back together, but yours looks like a far cry from that solution. (it is kind of hard to tell from the way the camera warps the true image)

The writing should also not come off like that.

That knife reeks of counterfeit to me. Laser teching doesn't "wipe off", unless you hit it with some 400 grit and a belt sander. The liners being unever is another thing that looks like it would be a fake. A little variance is one thing but that is straight up lop sided to be damned.
I'd send the store where you got it these pictures and a copy of this thread. They need to replace it for you. Ask them to inspect the knife before it leaves their store.

Make sure to shoot those pictures to Emerson before sending the knife to the retailer. Emerson knives would want to know if a recommended dealer was selling fakes. See what Emerson has to say about it being fake.

I have handled a bunch of Emersons and from those pics alone, it's NOT fake.

Just contact Emerson and send it in. It's definitely disappointing to see a new knife like that.

Hi Oldboy -

I don't think it is a fake - I am betting that they apply the "wing" logo on the blades en masse, and then apply the year when they are going to be assembled into a knife.

I don't know about the process, but it looks like the year was not "burned in" which allowed it to be wiped off.

As far as the liner mis-match goes, Emerson is not known for high end fit and finish.

best regards -

I was talking about the width as opposed to thickness. Either way, the pictures warp the image, and it is hard to tell exactly how much this knife is "leaning over."

This is what I would do:

Take it apart and put it back together, nice and snug.

If it is still uneven, send an email to Emerson and to your retailer with photos.

After hearing a response, decide the next step from there.

Thanks for your input guys, I'm gonna send an e-mail to Emerson with the pics attached

So I took your advice and took the knife apart, and now both sides of the handle line up MUCH better! It was a bit tricky lining up the scales with the liners and the backspacer (really makes me appreciate my Sebenza that much more), but after a bit of fidgeting I was able to line them all up and put the screws back in.

I still wanna hear what Emerson has to say about the laser etching rubbing off. It's not a huge deal, but I'm gonna e-mail them anyway.

Thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate it.

im looking at my mini A-100 and it looks real to me.

the G10 slabs and liners can be adjusted by loosening the screws. this will also adjust the lockup, and blade centering.

i just licked my thumb and tried rubbing off the print on my blade... mine still says Emerson. hehhe... that one is a head scratcher...

I have a 2011 Mini a 100 and the g10 scales and liners are jacked up like yours!!! Not lined up and tilt to one side. I'll probably try to loosen the screws and reassemble as well.

Same light wording...can barely read it. Not sure if it wipes off easily.

Serial 0651! Mine was from gpknives

Must have been the batch?

Woah! I would def send that back to Emerson. Never seen a logo come off that easily... get them to replace it otherwise no-one will believe its a genuine Emerson if you ever want to resell it.

UPDATE: After e-mailing Emerson about my knife, they asked me to send it back to them. They ended up sending me a brand new knife, no questions asked. GREAT customer service!

A bad batch, that would make sense... I have serial #0656, with a similar issue...

Emmerson is still there, but the year and model have 'vanished'...
