I had posted a while back that I was curious to pick up a Nessmuk knife. After some assistance in finding people who actually make such a blade pattern I started trolling Ebay for a Jeff White Nessmuk. There are some other fine makers out there but I think Jeff's was actually the closest being a thinner profile knife (which Mr. Nessmuk seems to have prefered from my recollection.)
So a quick out of the box assessment.
Just the facts Ma'm:
Direct from Ebay:
Replica 18th Century Nessmuk Skinner knife new and unused
High carbon steel blade (ANSI 1095) hardened to Rockwell 59 (HRC 58-60)
Blade is 5 1/2long, 1 1/2 wide, and 3/32 (0.094) thick
Full tang knife with flat ground durable blade edge
Nicely hand-finished osage orange (Mine is some other form of woody substance) handle secured with three brass pins
Each knife is hand crafted by Jeff White
Lifetime Warranty if you are unhappy for any reason, I will refund, repair or replace your item at no charge!
1) Shaving sharp, no problem
2) The feel: Great balance, the entire knife balances cleanly where bland and handle meet in beautiful harmony. The blade definitely has a sweet spot about an inch to an inch and a half down from the tip. This is unsurprisingly right behind the greatest part of the swell. The handle feels very nice. It's made of the newest tacticoolest handle substance... wood! For some reason there is a slightly gooey tackiness to the handle. I assume that this may be from oil or stain. This feels a wee awkward when fondling the knife. I don't even notice it a lick when I start using it. The only modification I might wish for on the handle is a wee bit of a hook on the bottom (as per Dale's Scales.) The jimping is EXTREMELY aggressive. It actually hurts when I get to using it. This seems compounded slightly by the thinness of the blade. So if you're ramming your thumb up the knifes spine for some hard control work expect some potential unpleasantness. I may get out a file and try slightly radiusing the jimping to amend the issue.
So far so good. I'm quite pleased. I love the feel of the thin blade as I experiment with slicing through various substances. The size of the knife is great. Oh and the price for the knife (w/o sheath) was $22.50 Shipped. Just a great deal on a great knife. If you're curious about the Nessy Jeff White can provide you with a supreme experience for an utterly minuscule price.
God bless,
Adam
