Well, i finally got my belt sander, 1x30 5" disc last night. Those ceramic belts from McMaster-Carr are sweet! I finished my drop point, blade # 2 and the warncliff, #3 and will heat treat them on weds. I spent a few hours grinding. I am going to get some 36 grit hoggers, but I dont know where to get them. Whats the URL for true grit? Next up is a 5.5" blade camp knife. If it works out well, it will be a very sweet, durable survuval knife. I hope to find some way to post pics soon!

Another quick question. For the guys who have worked with Amaranth, Purple Heart wood, how do I darken it? Propane torch is out and I don't know when it will be sunny for a long time. What else can I do???

Gotta love those belt grinders...

Just a thought on darkening purpleheart. you could probobly do it ( very carefully!!)using
the heat from the burner of a stove...I've never tried it but I know it dosent take much heat to get PH to darken.
maybe try it on some scrap first, Its worth a try if you have no other way.

Just a thought.

Good luck!!

Just leave the purple heart un-sealed for a couple of days and rub it in your hands real briskly(friction heat) and when the color is up finish it....I have also naticed that it will still darken after it has been sealed with super glue....Hope this helps,Bruce

Well, the grinder is still sweet. I noticed that the platen edges are already borken in, which is a plus! I also looked at a Delta 1X30 and it is almost EXACTLY identical. A few cosmetic things here and there, but the whole design, base, platen, etc are exactly the same. Does anyone have Tru grits website?

Stick the Purpleheart under a fluorescent light for a couple days. It'll darken and turn purple again after working it. You could probably just leave it out in the sun.

thanks for the website. I was trying Truegrit.com, but it didnt work. I forgot that they dont use the "e". DO you know if they sell 1x30 belts? All I saw was 1X42. Is there another place to get ceramic hoggers in 1x30? Well, I dont have a scanner, so I have to find another way to get the pics up.
