It finally happened to ME, the postal service lost a knife

Hi guys,

After dozens of packages going to and coming from the US Hong Kong England etc. finally it seems like the US postal service lost a simple package on the way to Holland and my under warrentee repaired Buck 560 got lost.

I informed Buck and they immediately replied but the problem seems to be that asking a "sent" status for any package can be done only after it has been "on its way" for 30 days

and then the information about what happened to it can take up to 2 full months

this makes me sad very sad.

Cheers, Bagheera

Bagheera, hopefully the knife was insured at time of shipping. Indeed it takes 30 days before a claim can be filed for lost or damage. A form must be filled out and submitted by the sender and is then forwarded to only ONE claims location in the entire US of A! In St. Louis.

It is probably up to each individuals company policy but in the future you may request for a confirmation # service from whomever you are doing any type of business with. This is done at the time of shipping at the PO for only .35! It allows either shipping or receiving party to monitor the packages progress as it goes thru the sytstem. The US Postal website provides info as to when and which PO branch it was dropped off at, if it is en route, where and when it arrives at the receiving branch PO and if a a successful attempt has been made to deliver. Either if the package was delivered, signed for, or a note of attempt delivery was made. And consequently if it is sitting at the local PO waiting for pickup. Well worth the. 35 in my experience. I hope they find your package.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I've got some concerns about a package I recently sent to another country; it hasn't had quite enough time to reach its destination, and I'll feel much better upon receiving confirmation of receipt on the other end. It's hard to say what really happens to lost packages. And it pi$$es me off a bit to think that there's really no reliable way to send packages anymore. Take care. Professor.

The most reliable is via U.S. Overnight Express mail! It is automatically insured for $5000.00, can be traced instantly via phone or internet, and requires a signature for delivery.
Not only is it quarentteed next day over night, it is also guarentted by a certain time as well, or your shipping costs refunded instantly. Can file a claim on it immediately as well. I had a package that was supposed to have been delivered by 12 noon once that I sent, it was delivered 8 minutes past that time, I got an instant refund from my post office for the shipping by 1pm that same day! Now, that is service!

Yes, it is a little more costly than normal mailing or shipping, but it is the most reliable. My second choice is U.S. Priority Mail. Never had any lost as of yet, but a couple of times they were delivered way late.

U.P.S. This is a long story here, but over the past 5 years or so, I have had 8 packages arrive extremely late when they were shipped via 2 day air, 1 a day late when it was shipped next day air, and 3 packages lost completely and I never did recover them. Took about a month to recover the cost of the lost items and the shipping costs from U.P.S.

Federal Express, have only had a dozen or so packages shipped via this way, none were lost or late.

These are my experiences I have had, I will still choose U.S. Priority Mail or U.S. Overnight Express over any others if I have a choice that is! Most dealers will give you these options, some may charge ridiculous prices for them though.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, I hope everything turns out okay for you!

Uhh.. I don't think there's an overnight express package for international service, Mark.

Only EMS, though even that isn't as reliable as when it was just new... bummer, huh...

NO OVERNIGHT Service for international? Man, that is a bumber

Mark

P.S. Even at a cost? Is it just from the U.S.A. to international countries, with no overnighters? That can be a real bite in the ...! Never shipped overseas or had anything shipped from overseas over night come to think of it, just U.S.A. to Canada and visaversa!

yes, unfortunately, we are dealing with the u s government here, whose boss we all know all too well, and whose workers are for the most part watching the clock for their 20 year alarm to ring (if you are a government employee and this does not fit your profile please forgive me-I grew up in the military and have seen the profile many, many times)

Mickey,I am sorry for your loss but if I am given a choice I always specify UPS just because they are the only ones locally who will leave a package on my porch if I am not home. That way I don"t have to take a day(s) off of work or play waiting for delivery.I do live on a quiet dead end street and so far (16 years) so good.I have lived places where this would not work.

For international mail from the U.S., there is Priority Global Guaranteed, which I believe is the same service time as regular Express Mail. So yeah, they do offer international service. What it costs, I don't know- domestic Express Mail is 11.75, and at that rate you can ship more than one knife, at least. Heck, some dealers want close to that for normal UPS shipping!

I do agree with Mark, though- Priority Mail's been really slow some times. They say 2-3 day but it's more like 5-6 day it seems. I worked in a UPS hub for four years as a loader and sorter, you'd be stunned by what goes on inside one of those places!!

Hi clip, hey I would be very interested in what goes on inside of one of those places (UPS hub)! I live about 10 miles from you and I'm sure my UPS comes from this hub you are talking about! Maybe that is why I have had sooooo much bad luck with UPS! I never use them anymore unless that is the only way a seller will ship! Please, do tell all

Maybe you can start up another thread topic regarding UPS - delivery of Knives

We're on the verge of discontinuing international sales. UPS is too expensive and the customers won't pay it. Mail can't be tracked. Either many of them are lost or stolen, or they get tied up in customs, or the recipients simply claim not to have received it and take their money back through the credit card processor. I can tell you that overall international sales are unprofitable for us (an actual financial loss overall) because of this problem. I've tolerated it so far to see if there is some sort solution for it but I don't see any real solutions on the horizon other than ending international sales completely. I'm dealing with a $300 one at the moment. The last $300 one we lost was week before last.

We used to lose about 2 to 3 domestic U.S. priority mail packages per week until we cut back to nearly zero on mail shipments within the U.S. We simply aren't willing to ship anything expensive by Priority Mail any longer. We're pretty much moving toward 100% UPS where we rarely lose anthing and the packages are trackable. The number of UPS packages that are returned as refused or undeliverable is significantly smaller than the Prioiry Mail packages customers claim not to have received. Recently we have begun refusing orders with a PO Box address for anything over $30. The problem is really serious.

If you look at things from the perspective of a company that ships several hundred knives per week, mail, airmail, Priority mail or any other kind of mail is simply too risky. I'm not happy to report these things to you but, sadly, they are the truth.

There is a segment of UPS that offers overnight anywhere in the world, and shorter time than that even. It was originally a different company that was purchased by UPS, but for the right price, you can have nearly anything shipped in 8 or 24 hours from pickup. You may just pay for the plane tickets from point A to point B though...

That said, my preferred method of shipment os USPS priority. If it is an item of value, which can depend on many factors, I request insurance. I can also get registered mail, but I use a PO box, so a signature on my end means little to me.
