I have a old Buck 110 I bought new back in 1988. The priganal edge on it was good, but after years of hard use it wore down. I was never good at sharpening. And one time I used a power grinder to sharpen it. OK. I was ignorant. I just lived with a kinda sharp knife. Then I stopped using it. I worked with a guy who claimed to be a knife guy and he took it and sharpened it for me. It was better but still not what I would call hsarp, but sharp enough to use. Then about a year and a half ago I got a galco system and sharpened her up. It was sharp, but not shaving arm hair sharp like I like. I thought maybe it just can't get that sharp. Well I got a new limited 110 and that one hsaved arm hair easily. So I knew the design would do it. So tonight I pulled out my old buck out and the Galco system and went to work. I took my time and sure enough, when I tried it on my arm, the hairs jumped off my arm. :D Now it is sharp. Finally. Now I need to find some things to cut.

Congratulations!

I love my GATCO.

Do you have the diamonds or standard stones?

Are you stropping after the GATCO?

Do you have the GATCO extra fine or ultimate finishing hones?

The extra fine and ultimate hones will refine your edge and stropping will refine it even further.

Good Luck.

I have the standard stones, but plan on upgrading as soon as I can.

I have not tried stropping yet, but want to give it a try one of these days.

I have the ultra fine and the ultra fine finishing hone. I thought that finishing hone was a lot like stropping so I did not need to do it. But I have heard differently. And sounds like you are saying the same thing. I guess I got to get some leather from somewhere.

Hi Buck Fan -

Good deal!

I just ordered a strop block from Knives Plus in Texas -

http://www.knivesplus.com/KP-STROP8-STROPBLOCK.html

Can't beat it for $15 in my opinion.

I think sharpening is as much as art as anything - you just have to practice practice practice.

best regards -

Hey Bill!

Great to hear, it is fun when you can put a better than the average bear edge on a knife. I know the feeling, you just have to share with someone, and nowhere better than here. A bunch of guys who can share in that sense of satisfaction. Now, You may want to work on a micro bevel on that Buck. It can get you to the next level of sharpness. Welcome to the edge of the lunatic fringe! Come on in, the water feels fine.

Ditto!

GATCO was my favorite clamp system, and I used it until I got an EdgePro. At the same time I picked up a DMT Aligner clamp and used that as a 'carry along' with wet/dry sandpaper when camping as it was so lightweight. The GATCO stones did a fine job on all my knives. Glad to hear that you had success with yours!

I have only used stones, but the older I get, the more I am thinking of either a Gatco or a Sharpmaker. Any thoughts?

And congats on a successful Buck resurrection!.

Thanks guys. I knew you all would understand how I felt. I was just thinking about strops, and realized I have a guitar strap that I think would be perfect for stropping. I will try it tonight. :D

I love the GATCO. I appreciate the angle options versus the limited angles with a sharpmaker.

Going from dull to sharp is easier with a GATCO versus a Sharpmaker.

As with most things stropping can be as difficult or easy, expensive or cheap as you would like. I prefer the inexpensive and easilly obtained.

My leather was about 2 bucks from the scrap bin at Tandy. My compound is polishing compound for under 5 bucks from Sears.

Good Luck
