I have a friend who is what you might call a high grade picker. He travels up and down the east coast buying antiques, jewelry, and precious metals. He often finds things he thinks I would like and gets them for me. He usually passes them to me for whatever he paid. A month or so ago he bought a huge scrimshawed whales tooth and an elephant tusk scrimshawed with four whaling scenes. The total price was what the last 6" of the tusk was worth. I paid him around 5 cents on the dollar value of the pair.
Yesterday he was buy and as he was leaving, he remembered he had some "horns" in his car for me. There was a monster of a hippo tusk, and a juvenile elephant tusk. He said he found them at an estate sale and paid $75 for them. I gave him $100 and told him to keep looking.
The hippo tusk is the largest I ever saw. It is 18" across and 13" between the two ends. It has split almost perfectly down the center into two identical sides. The elephant tusk is about 1.25" thick and 16" long.
