I am not too familiar with the carry laws. I go to a University of California and I was wondering if it is legal to carry a cqc 8 on campus? I read somewhere about being able to carry a 2.5 inch fixed blade if it is work related. Can someone please clarify if it is legal for me to carry my emerson folder that is close to 4 inches on campus. Thanks.

on campus is one place where i leave my blades at home. I have a keychain spyderco jester and thats about it. Gatta remember how liberal college is

You will have to check your student handbook for rules on campus. As far as california laws go do a search with the search feature in this forum and you should find your answers.

i have my 8 on me now. but i usually carry a smaller blade around campus. the 8 usually doesnt see the light of day as i only carry it only at night

TLR is right: it really doesn't matter what state law allows--campuses are either private property or specially protected public property and as such can set far more stringent rules.

In other words, it's whatever they say. And as the consensus here agrees, they probably say "nothing."

i disagree, why would the student hand book on campus say nothing about weapons...

similarly, in highschool smoking was strictly forbidden; however, the hand book said nothing about chewing tobacco ... but when a student got caught using the product or having it on them it didn't matter. "its a pocket knife not a weapon" the school will

I'm all for freedom on campus, but if the wrong student sees you with a pocket knife in your pocket i garentee the school will make a big deal about it .... especially after all these shootings we see on tv. just not worth it IMO. being a male on campus your generally safe. I'd stick to a keychain blade or atleast keep the blade in a pocket or jacket so no one can see it. Wether were right or wrong going to college these days is hard enough as it is.... dont bring heat on yourself!

What I meant was that student handbook would probably allow nothing. Sorry about the confusion: you didn't misread it, I miswrote it.

just read it again .. partially my mistake too. i just got home from the gym and im pretty exhausted :)

What's up with colleges in the States? You have the 2nd amendment and people wimp out over pocket knives?
I go to university in "ban everything deadly" Canada, and when I pull the Military, P'kal, Resistor or Styker out to open an envelope or take off a coffee cup lid tab no one cares(even the girls!) What's up with that?

If you want to carry, and it's for defense, stick it in the bottom of your pocket(no clips showing). No one will know. If you need a utility knife, then buy the most innocuous looking utility knife you can find(with a short blade) and keep it in the book bag.

Agree, but its just the way it is. College is so liberal it makes me cringe :(

here is the relevant penal code section:

626.10 (b) Any person, except a duly appointed peace officer as defined
in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2, a
full-time paid peace officer of another state or the federal
government who is carrying out official duties while in this state, a
person summoned by any officer to assist in making arrests or
preserving the peace while the person is actually engaged in
assisting any officer, or a member of the military forces of this
state or the United States who is engaged in the performance of his
or her duties, who brings or possesses any dirk, dagger, ice pick, or
knife having a fixed blade longer than 21/2 inches upon the grounds
of, or within, any private university, the University of California,
the California State University, or the California Community Colleges
is guilty of a public offense, punishable by imprisonment in a
county jail not exceeding one year, or by imprisonment in the state
prison.

highlighted portion should clarify for you. individual universities may have their own stand alone rules, but generally will comply with the penal code.

your safest bet is to check with the university police.

There is no state law prohibiting you from carrying a folding knife, visible or concealed, regardless of length.

When I went to SFSU, school rules limited blade length to 5" (five inches, that's not a typo).

Check up on your school rules, they should be posted online.

And to avoid attention, you might want to keep it concealed, and not become known as "the guy with the knife."

A 4" folder is a great choice for university campus carry, and perfectly legal. But, it is also always best to keep a low profile!

Your campus may have rules of its own, but that does not make it illegal!! You might get expelled from school for a "rules violation", but you aren't in violation of any law so you aren't going to end up in court.

Do check for local ordinances in the city areas around your campus.

I do medical research at a So. Calif. private university, and I carry an Emerson Combat Karambit for EDC. (You would be surprised at how many women on campus are packing knives!!!) The university does have a "no guns" policy (all they do is quote state law, which does not prohibit a properly stored gun in a vehicle), but nothing on knives.

There are a million and one colleges and universities in the country. Find a different one if this one is likely to give you any BS......

Some new developments for me......

First off, this is So. Calif., which is big time earthquake country. When the big one comes, the whole system is going to break down. You had better be ready to provide for your own security, because there isn't going to be any government agency around the do it for you! That means, having weapons readily acessable.....

Got a new employee handbook today at my university. Universities seem to collect extreme left leaning faculty members, so that gives you a clue as to where we are going here.....

The handbook prohibits weapons of all kinds, on university property, and they have the right to search you, your belongings, and vehicle. (Previously, it only quoted state law that prohibits guns on a campus, but not if properly stored....for instance unloaded and locked in the trunk of a vehicle.) The gun thing is actually a very easy one....just park on city streets rather than in the univ parking lot.

The knife thing is more complicated! My prefered EDC knife is the Emerson Combat Karambit. Ok, I would have a hard time pretending that it is a utility knife, so I will just leave it in my vehicle. But, then what to carry??? A 4" folder is certainly legal under state law (as is the Karambit), but at what point is security likely to conseder something a weapon rather than a utility knife.

This is all such BS because the definition of a "weapon" is completely subjective! A chair can be a weapon. I keep a shovel in my truck that is a way more effective weapon than a knife. Where does the line get drawn....subjectively by some cop wannabeeeeee security officer?

I goto a UC as well, I generally carry a Benchmade Mini Griptilian. I've asked our UCPD on this issue before and they didn't have any problems with the knife due to the short blade length. There is nothing in the campus handbook for carry so I just referred from the PC which the UCPD told me they follow. There was however rules stating I could not carry or have pocketknives in the dorms/living areas of the school. I don't live on campus anymore :)
