Hurricane Frances will probably be paying us a visit in about 36-48 hours. If it hits we may lose power for a while. As usual this one is going to wreck our sleep early Saturday morning, although it is massive enough to trash the place long before that.

Man, this thing is a monster. Get out if you're close to the coast. Be safe, and good luck!

Yikes!

When I lived in Savannah - I volunteered with CEMA (local version of FEMA). During hurricanes, we evacuated special-needs people. The reason I got involved was simple: the summer we moved there, we got evacuated out for Bertha....and I swore I'd never do that again! !

So, I did whatever I had to do to be able to stay behind. :D

Nothing like driving down a city of 160,000 people that is completely dead. Much less a Historic city like Savannah.

Had a few pretty good scares...evacuated people a few times....but never got hit bad.

Amazing though, how much people moan-n-groan about evacuating when the hurricane doesn't hit.....

Best of luck to you, my friend!

This thing is bigger than Florida. But, they have already ordered the evacuated 750,000 people from the coastal areas in town. Then again, South Florida has an average elevation of 5 feet below sea level (that is what all of the man made lakes are about).

I guess this is what we get when we live in a state shaped like a bowling pin.

Good luck to you, N2S. Might be a nasty one. Anyone know what khuk to use against a hurricane?

I didn't know that you used to live in Savannah. It is one of my favorite places to visit. I have gone on six ghost tour pub crawls but have never seen a ghost. Anyway, depending on where it hits and which way it goes we could have problems even here in Atlanta. Back in 95 (I think it was 1995) Hurrican Opel came through here and we had some damage from it and it wasn't that bad by the time it reached Atlanta. This one depending on where it comes on land could still be very bad when it reaches us. Hurrican force wind 180 miles from the eye is what they were saying on the Weather Channel. I hope that it doest hit Savannah.

The last hurricane to hit Savannah was in the late 1800s, Mark. It's in a little "cove", so to speak. It has avoided serious hurricanes because: 1 - they usually go to Florida (sorry, N2S...:() and 2 - if they get enough energy to turn North, they end up making landfall in South Carolina or North Carolina instead.

The worst they've had in 100 years was gale force winds <75 mph.

But yes, if a hurricane ever hit the place....the damage would be extensive, both financially and historically.....we'd lose a lot.....such a beautifully preserved historic town.

Finally talked my 67 year old Mom into leaving her house on the coast and come to my house in South Ga to be safe and damned if the thing aint projected to come right down my driveway.

Last time was 94 when a Tropical Storm came right up through the Gulf
and just sat down in our area flooding us out for about three weeks.

anyway looks like things are going to get real interesting for quite a few folks

Stay safe N2S. We'll be waitin' for your return. The news isn't saying anything hopeful about Frances. :grumpy:
Good luck and some smoke goin' in your direction.

Ditto.

I'm concerned about my daughter and family in Jacksonville but it looks like it won't catch the brunt of the storm, still could be bad enough.
The damned hurricanes like to spawn tornadoes!!!!:grumpy: :(

Edutsi...did you tell me that your daughter was in JAX? I just got back from there! I'll get info next time and send smoke in between...

So sorry to have forgotten that's where they are...next trip...I promise! Smoke until then!

Keep safe!

Hurricane Frances passed just 150 miles to the north of San Juan on Tuesday. We had only a couple of showers and light wind (we where lucky this time).

Now our attention is on tropical storm Ivan (fresh out the coast of Africa). It should be near San Juan on Tuesday-Wednesday of next week.
