Wouldn, tchaknowit ? I have hornets at the house now . In my back lawn somewhere . My dog already got it in the mouth a while back and he almost got it again yesterday . He bites them when they go near his bone .

Does anybody know how to find the nest in the ground ? I don,t want these little suckers to spread out .

Make the mountain come to Mohammad. Set out a bait trap for them. Most feed stores have them here. If all else fails, call a pest guy and let him get stung.

Yep, trapping is an easy solution. When they get full, put up another. When living in a house on the river here, we kept 4 traps around the house and replaced them a couple times each season. Didn't stop the mud wasps from building nests under our eaves though.

Most of my dogs have been pretty intelligent, but they never pass up the chance to bite a bee, hornet, wasp etc. Every single one of our pups has gotten the "treatment" A half cup of beer after they get stung.

That must be why they always chase bees ;).

My father had told me to stay away from a portion of the back yard, huge hornets nest. Saw my little brother out the back window beating at the spot with a stick. We raced outside to see if he was still alive, he was fine, he had beaten the nest off of the tree, and was literally beating it into oblivion. I guess luck smiles on everybody.

I guess I could come out and find the nest, I've always had bad luck, hornets and wasps always find me.

A half cup of beer ? Man I,m gonna go get stung myself .

When he was young I would give my dog a sip of beer . Now he turns his nose up .

What's the beer for? I had a Black Lab that would have a beer with me every now and again...I have a feeling if he and I were to have had a contest, he would have drunk me under the table! LOL!

I never heard of the beer thing either. That sounds like a remedy I can sink my teeth into.....

The only real way to find the hive that I know of is to just watch them to see where they go into the ground.

Once you find them the best solution I've found for ground-dwelling bees & wasps is wait until night (when they are calmed down) and heavily dust the area (very heavy at the entrance) with Sevin (a powder insecticide). The wasps get it on their bodies as they walk through it and carry it into the hive.

The best way to get rid of hives out in the open (standard wasps) is again wait until night, and then spray the hive with a foaming insecticide. The foam sticks to the hive much much better than the other stuff.

The foam is supposed to also work on paper wasp nests (the big round ones), but I found it best (if possible) to just wait until the winter and cut the nest out with a knife.

Night time is the Right Time!
They may be elsewhere, and coming in from the "outback".

Malathion works wonders on any bug that flies. Extremely bad for bees.
You could spray the immediate area around the house, just to keep them at bay, while you stalk them.

For an impromtu trap, put a small peice of raw meat in a liter bottle. take another liter bottle, slice the top off of it, making a funnel shaped piece, then tape it to the other bottle. The hornets will go for the raw meat, down into the funnel, into the liter bottle, and won't be able to get out. Dribble some beer or cola in there too, acts as an attractant, and gets them all sticky, making it even tougher to get out.

Sevin dust or diatomaceous earth will cure all your bug problems. Also hairspray is the modern bug flak cannon. Aerosol hairspray will definately deep six an entire nest worth of wasps. Its sticky and adheres to their wings preventing them from flying and clogs the pores on thier abdomen with which they use to breathe and they suffocate. In many cases it can be picked up at the dollar store as well.

If you give them a spray they immediately fall out of the sky like a rock, after which you will never have to worry about them again.

Hmmmm . I,m gonna use extra hold on those suckers . L:O:L

Thanks . I do have to say that when I see these guys they don,t get aggressive . They already are aggressive . They are already dodging and weaving towards me . they come in low under the radar . They are a little smaller than the P:I:T:A: wasps I remember that while still dangerous you could stomp or swat before they go into attack mode . There is no short period of threat asessment . I would want a sure fire wide spread spray .

I find the best way to locate a ground nest is to walk around the back yard pushing a mower until your foot drops into a hole and the stinging begins.... oh wait, that's just a nasty flashback... :(

We tried the powder before with no real luck, along with the "drown em" method suggested by our neighbor. We finally called the pest control guy and he used something that actually scorched the lawn all around the area. (ended up having to re-sod that part the next year)...haven't had a nest since.

Good luck - and try your best to keep your dog away. Just like humans they can aquire an allergy over time. One bite and done in that case.

LHD ? That made my day ! The Rodenator . What a hoot . I can just see some little old lady sticking this thing in a mouse hole underneath her sink . Proabably blow every cupboard in the house off its hinges . L:O:L
