It only took me 19 years to get a Spyderco...

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I just had to get it all out.

Back in the Summer of 1984, I was in an indoor flea market on Long Island. A guy had a nice display of Spydercos and it was the first time I'd ever seen one. The whole design just blew me away. Well, I had $$$ in my pocket so I made my choice and pulled out my wallet. The salesman said the model I wanted was sold out (I don't even remember which one it was). Eyeing the display case, I asked him if I could buy the display model. He agreed, and unwrapped the wires that held it in place. No luck. Some Einstein had actually GLUED the knives to the felt backing. A few hundred dollars worth of perfectly good knives glued down.

A week or so later, I went to a B&M store in a mall and told the owner I was looking for these new-fangled knives with a hole in the blade that allowed for one-handed opening. He and his wife had never heard of such a thing but rather condescendingly informed me that you could open up just about any knife one-handed if you knew how. This didn't help me much, but they did manage to sell me a Buck 500 for almost $50, which I didn't realize was highway robbery at the time.

A few years later, stationed at Coast Guard Airsta Brooklyn, I handled a Spydie that was owned by one of the Rescue Swimmers. It impressed me, even though it had been used so much it was loose and wobbly. I really had to get my hands on a Spydie.

Many more years went by, with me spotting Spydercos here and ther but never quite getting around to buying one. Then, a few weeks ago I finally got around to it, and bought a Military. It's just as great as I'd hoped it would be, and the long itch has finally been scratched. It won't be the last.

I wonder what ever happened to all those glued-up Spydies?
