When I cut myself it's rarely when I was actually in the process of using my knife to make a cut.

I was opening a new album that came in the mail when it happened, I sliced the wrap then began trying to peel it off when I inadvertently loosened my hold and the knife slipped right through slicing
my pinky.

I should have folded the blade back up first but I wasn't sure if I was done with it.
I was definitely a clean cut because I keep my knives as sharp as I can get them, but I don't know how deep and I really don't want to think about it.

I really don't cut myself with my knives very often and can't even remember the last time I did, I get so many knicks and cuts with files & rasps...etc in my workshop that it's hard to remember where they all come from.

This us just another reminder that you should be careful any time those blades are exposed, not just when you're using them.

Hickory n steel Hickory n steel - Funny you should bring this up as there have been quite a few posts lately about people not being happy with the sharpness of their new knives as they come from the factory and there have been further discussions about how sharp is sharp enough.

Some time ago, I was preparing to take a picture of a brand new, Case CV Mini Trapper with Yellow Derlin Handles, and as I was opening the blades to set the knife up for the picture, the wife said something from the kitchen. As I turned my head to see what she wanted, I slid my thumb down the spey blade. My oh my! Opened my thumb up like a split plumb.

After we got the bleeding stopped, I made a small Butterfly Bandage, squeezed the cut together, and the wife put the bandage on and then a couple of band-aids. Probably could have used a couple stitches but it already hurt enough without having someone poke tiny holes around it while pushing/pulling a needle and thread through it.

Believe me!! A Case CV Mini Trapper with Yellow Derlin Handles is plenty sharp right out of the box.

I remember this Barlow being pretty sharp out of the box, I wouldn't be surprised if it needed a quick stropping or something but that would be about it.
Their Barlow's seem to have some of the best even / sharp factory edges, whoever they have sharpening them has a good steady hand.

its funny you say that, i didnt know i grazed my thumb testing the edge on my knives until like the day later. its a slit of skin and not a cut, but as a health care worker, the deeper cuts sting with purell.

Years ago, when I was living in Texas, I'd just received a new 5-blade Case Sowbelly in the mail (pictured below). Brought it home to check it out. It came with a round display tin, with all blades opened up for viewing. Several of the blades only opened maybe 1/2 or 1/3rd. That should've been warning enough. As I extracted it from the display tin, the smaller of the two clip blades snapped shut and neatly clipped 1/4 inch ovals of skin from the tips of my index and middle fingers. I remember seeing one of the skin clips fall to the floor like a snowflake as I dropped the knife and tin. The other oval of skin was still barely attached to my finger. Both bleeding like a stuck pig. I had made plans to have a steak dinner with a friend that evening. And while dining that evening, both of my bandaged fingertips were still oozing blood through the Band-Aids while I was awkwardly attempting to slice my steak (dominant hand, of course). Felt like an idiot. Chalked it up to a painful lesson learned.

I am always very weary of blades partially open like this, I haven't had many or any accidents with them but seeing them makes me cringe.

Btw it looks like Case did quite a decent job with the edges on those blades.

Yes, absolutely. After that incident, I do cringe at the thought of it and shake my head that I didn't see it coming at the time. That clip blade shared a spring with another blade at the opposite end, both of them partially opened and leaving an awful lot of tension on the spring. Slammed shut like a bear trap on my fingertips. And I was duly impressed with the sharpening job Case did on this one, at least on that one clip blade. I haven't tested the others, at least in the same manner. 😬

They just looked pretty even in the picture, that sorta thing stands out to me because I've had a number that were pretty inconsistent.
I can still sharpen and use them just fine, it's just a visual thing mostly.

Same here, I've cut myself 10x more often getting knives set up and posed for pictures than I ever do while using the knife for cutting something.
