It should be a Plumb hatchet.

Good afternoon sirs.
A few months ago, I purchased a Plumb carpenter's hatchet on eBay, but the seller sent it with no apparent brand. I used the ebay system to request a return and refund of the amount paid ($5.00). I know it's a ridiculous amount, but honesty is priceless. The ad was very clear that it was a Plumb model, with photos of a Plumb hatchet. Money returned, seller didn't want me to return the hatchet, so I suspended the dispute and kept the purchase. Even if you buy a pig in a poke.
I decided to restore and change the cable. Now it's more presentable.
Does anyone have any idea what brand it could be?
The only markings are that number "2" and "solid steel".

Thanks.

It very well may be a Plumb, because "solid steel" was used as a selling point for Plumb axes around 1910-13 or thereabouts. The poll being lower where it attaches to the eye doesn't look right through.

Thank you for your help.
What was advertised was exactly like this:

Did the original Plumb come out in a batch without the brand engraved on the blade? In that decade you mentioned.

Not saying it is a Plumb, I just knew that "Solid Steel" was a Plumb thing at one time and their 1906 catalog has examples of Plumbs touting their steel instead of plain Plumb stamps. The variety of Plumb offerings was pretty extensive at one time, of course it wasn't just Plumb.

To prove who the maker was you would need to match the stamp to a known example or a catalog image. That task probably isn't insurmountable but it could take some time, maybe even years. That is a fancy stamp though and shouldn't be to hard to spot should you see it again.

Excellent material.
Thank you very much.

It doesn't weigh on my conscience that I didn't suspend the purchase and kept the payment to the seller. Even though it's not the same hatchet he advertised. I'm happy with the purchase. It cost $5.00 plus $35.00 shipping.

We will probably never find out for sure, but #2 font seems similar to one I have seen on Winchester and Hammond's Tacony branded hatchets. In my opinion it is more likely it was made by Hammond. I suspect it was produced for a hardware store. sold with paper label, and only stamped solid steel omitting Taoony.

They have a head weight and cut listed there as well. Smaller bits and 5 oz heavier than Plumbs, 5 oz is quite a lot.

For sure. They need to ship what they used for the pictures. Otherwise it's fraud. Stick it to 'em and that helps us all.
