I took the family on vacation to Six Flags Astroworld in Houston, TX and was :grumpy:SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED:grumpy: with that theme park. You live in a different world when you need to walk through metal detectors to enter an amusement park.   After a mild confrontation with the teenage "screeners", I laid out my light carry of EDCs for that day; Calypso Jr. PE, Spydercard 50/50, Jester SE, and a Kershaw Chive(as money clip). At first, I went along with their "security" measures, but then changed my mind, retrieved my knives and took them back to the car. I don't trust ANYONE with my Spydies. I would have taken my family somewhere else but tickets were prepaid in advance and the kids' expectations were high, so we went in to the park. My money will be better spent next time.

Anyways, the vacation wasn't a total loss. There just happened to be a Gun and Knife show at the AstroArena this very weekend! I went by there and picked up the newest addition to my Spydie collection, a green handled Bob Lum Chinese in PlainEdge(this Spydie is N-I-C-E!!).

I guess that it was fate for that show to be in town...or I was just REALLY lucky.:D :D :D

Sorry, those things really put a damper on your day.

Later this month I am visiting a friend in KC and she wants to go to Worlds of Fun. I am carrying. I don't know if I will be searched or not. If we are I would just as soon spend the money that would have been used on my ticket at another establishment in KC that doesn't think it is so wrong to have a useful tool and/or means of SD on one's person.

Yesterday, at the Fair St. Louis, I approached the gate and was escorted to one side. The rent a cop looked at the bulge in my pocket and immediately asked what I had in my pockets. I replied that in my right pocket, I had my Zeiss monocular and that in my left pocket I had my wallet. He looked at the mentioned items and waved me through. I did not mention or show him the Spyderco Calypso Jr. in my right pocket with the monocular.

On the one hand, yea I get pretty pissy about the loss of my right to SD (GOD GIVEN that it is) and to carry a 'simple tool' on my person.

On the OTHER HAND...the thought of that bunch of creeps behind me having the same right? mmmm...now that's scary indeed. Somehow no one getting in with a blade does not seem such a bad alternative. When my wife and I were dating we got caught in the middle of a spit fight in one of the lines at GA\NJ. Not a good time to play the macho role (outnumbered by about 20 to 1 at the time), we had to leave, (not a good memory-what could I have done even with a knife?-NOTHING; you got to know when to fold them).

AS to theme parks in general? I can't stand them, none of them. This includes the great boardwalks of the Jersey shore as well. And yea the beach sucks too! My family doesn't understand why, but I just abhor large sweaty crowds of people waiting in line for 45min. to get even sweatier (word?)on a 30sec. ride! BAH HUMBUG! Obviously I aint a popular guy in my house :D . Even worse, I've got to take the family to Six Flags Jackson NJ because my daughter won a ticket for reading so well at school. BAH-HUMBUG; why don't they give the kid another book to read?

Nah...I want a cabin somewhere around Whitefish Montana, or maybe even something in the W. VA hills...aaahhhh paradise.

I think next time I go to 'Great Disapointment...er...Adventure, I'll have to get a piece of 'shaped' Lexan for my sock :)

oops....sorry to rant man :( hope I didn't ruin your thread...

good deal at the knife show though :)

...back to the doghouse....

Mongrel

Hey, Mongrel, maybe we could go halvsies on a Montana cabin and then never have to go to another damn theme park again! :D

Mongrel, don't worry about it man. I get what you're saying.;)

I was dog-tired last night, after the long drive home, so I hope that my post made some kind of sense. Anyways, I just had a pinch of frustration about that search crap that needed to be let out, so I decided to post here. It seems that only bonafide KnifeKnuts understand how naked you can feel if you don't have a blade on your person.

NO MORE DAMN THEME PARKS FOR ME AND MINE.:grumpy: Except for maybe SeaWorld in San Antonio, unless they search you too. If that's the case...hell, I'll just go fishing.

P.S.--I'm sure enjoying my new Lum PE. This Spydie cuts like there is no tomorrow and I absolutely love it!!!:D

KBR,
I hate to tell you buddy but Sea World here in FLA. makes you go thru a metal detector. They have permanantly lost me as a customer. I wouldn't buy Budweiser products now even if I did still drink. :mad:How dare these people trample on my rights.
Disneyworld is now walking the thin line with me too. But the last couple of times I went They just wanted to look in my fannypack and saw all my gear and still waved me thru. I carry an Underwater Kinetics 4 AA cell flashlight, personal fan, Leatherman Wave on my keychain, Nitro, and oh, did I mention the 5" blade Cold Steel lg. Vacquero in the back flap?
BTW, I carry my EDC's in my pockets and have not been bothered yet. I un-clip them sometimes and let them sit at the bottom of my pockets till I get in. Other times they stay clipped on the way thru the gate and I've had no challenges to date.

Hey MnBlade, not a bad offer....

I should have told my wife BEFORE we married that all I needed was a good squaw, a good horse, a Winchester, and a Bowie, on about 500 acres of wilderness west of the ole Mississip' and I would be a truly happy man...well through in a good 4x4 an oil fired boiler, a foot locker full of gold, mmmmm....let's see..... :D

Pan camera to a shot of Robert Redford as Jerimiah Johnson looking up into those Tetons......(yea I know it was filmed in Utah-I think, probably wasn't the Tetons, but I have SEEN the Tetons and that's what it looked like to me :) )

Don't forget beer, my friend! ;)

Does anyone know if they're using metal detectors at Busch Gardens these days? The wife has asked me to take her there (it'd be her first time), and I don't want to get caught unprepared...

Well, this is starting to suck.:( I'm beginning to feel like the grim reaper of vacations.
Sorry Mr. Daher but Busch Gardens also utilizes a metal detector at the entrance.:barf: I was going to go the last time I was in Tampa and my sister-in-law said I'd better be ready to leave my knives in the car. Needless to say, I found something else to do that day.

Thanks for the info, misque. Boy, that sucks!
Wish I knew that before I bought those year passes... :( :grumpy:

I seriously doubt that things will change by next year , so I guess that SeaWorld is out for next year's vacation.:barf:

P.S.--For those of you that may not know, SeaWorld is also a Busch Gardens theme park.:grumpy:

Alright I am headed to Worlds of Fun in KC next week. Anyone been there lately? What should I know. I have already told my friend that if they want to take away my legal items I would rather spend my money on establishments that believe I have the right to carry legal items. I hope it is not going to be a problem though, as they have some sweet looking coasters.

Whoa! man..this is seriously depressing! I've been like dreaming of taking my son to Sea World for years now, and I may very well wind up voiding that plan. oh well, between the Kenai Fjords wildlife cruises, Alaska Sea Life Center, and fishing trips with Grampa and I, I'm sure he'll get to learn and experience plenty. Can't wait until he's old enough to get his OW 1 certification! yeah! that's it! screw the friggin' amusement parks and thier metal detectors! ha! I'll get him OW 1 certification and take him to see things first hand! in Alaska and the lower 48... ha! it's just a delay in plans...and actually an improvement on plans! I'm not depressed anymore.:D

On the other hand Glad to hear ya' wound up with a sweet knife coming out of the deal. a Chinese Lum has been on my "I want" list for awhile, now, but I just haven't gotten around to buying one yet. ah, a day of lines, junk food and cheap thrill rides given up for a decent knife that will last your lifetime, and probably whoever it would be handed down to as well? not a bad deal, I'd say...

I can't help asking though...how did the family take the change of plans?

Kinda also thinkin'... I'm wondering if we oughta get up a regular list of anti-knife establishments somewhere here on BF, so us knife knuts no which places not to bother wasting our time with?

For what it's worth I can't think of ANY tourist attractions in Alaska that don't allow knives. One of the man reasons I love this place!

One of the many reasons I'm so enthusiastic about well-built, relatively inexpensive knives is because of this. You can find metal detectors all over these days. If I'm carrying my delica or endura, I typically walk outside, find the closest flower planter (you will find those outside most amusement parks, conference centers, etc.), and just shove the knife in the dirt under the leaves. It's inexpensive enough that it doesn't make me cringe to put the knife through this, and even if it were spotted and taken, it's inexpensive enough that it wouldn't make me cry. Never had one stolen though, it's always still there at the end of the day. Anytime I'm going to someplace new, I swap out any more expensive knives for the endura, just in case I have to ditch it for the afternoon.

They really didn't mind, Runs With Scissors.:) Actually, we had only planned on going to the theme park on Saturday. On Sunday we were planning on going to go to the Galleria, which is a HUGE mall with an ice skating rink, as well as, driving around town and seeing other tourist attractions. After some driving around on Saturday(Houston traffic is BAD!!) my wife changed her mind about the Galleria and decided to stay and visit with her best friend. Our two girls stayed with her, and our two boys went with me to the gun show.:D

The trip was only a two day sort of thing, because we really don't like being away from home for too long. All in all, everyone did enjoy themselves anyway.

Joe, you've given me a VERY good idea. I'd never thought of that before, but I'll give it a try next time. ;)
