It was so cold....

the wood grew hair to stay warm.

We finally have a high pressure system setting over us up here in the PNW, bringing sunny skies, but very cold temps.
(unlike last week's road trip to go see the Bald Eagles, which was wet 'n cold.)

So I went for a road trip yesterday to an area my brother and I used to camp in back in the late 90s.
There were a few camping spots next to a river and I wanted to see if I could find 'em again.

Well I found the spot but most of the area has been logged out and the road to the camp sites is gated now.:(

Further on up, the road is pretty much impassable due to snow depth so I stopped here for a few pics.
Still pretty country, but for the scars.

Took my new favorite JK along.

On the way out I stopped along a little creek for a look see and was amazed at the hair like ice formations coming off the dead wood laying around the creek bed.
Pretty neat.

Thanks for looking' and have a good year all.

Thanks for posting the "cool" pics:rolleyes: Glad to see the knife getting the field time it deserves. No snow or ice around here
so far this winter but I did see something similar last winter:

Cool shots Mykel - I have not seen that either - very interesting ice formation.

Cool pictures, Mykel - it's always neat to stumble across stuff like that, and even neater when you happen to have a camera to capture and share!

very interesting, myke thanks for sharing,

we have to get you a walking buddy though,

That is cool, I have never seen anything like that!

Thanks to slg we now know this is Ribbon Ice and the stuff I found is Hair Ice.
Thanks for the pic.

Great pics Mykel.. Evidently it's water emerging from the pores of the wood as it gets cold.

Thanks for the link slg, good read.
I sent Dr. Carter some pics so he can add another location to the sighting list as this was a little further east than the sightings on the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Isl.
