It wasn't a general!

This is my first time on this forum so if you have discussed this in the past please have patience. My question is this--- I had a fixed blade knife in 1980 and again in 1983 and they were both the length of a general but the blade was wider, kind of like a Big Sky blade but it was a big knife. In fact I remember it was the biggest knife Buck offered at the time. Does anybody know what this knife was?

keencut,

If the knife in question had a reddish/brown wood handle (with the tang showing), with a very nice silver-colored end-cap, and wide guard, then yes, it was "more than likely" a Frontiersman.

...Very SAD to hear that Buck had discontinued this one...

Dann,
Up until 1981 or 1982, the 124 Frontiersman models were handled with slabs of black micarta for standard factory production units. I know the 1980 catalog featured micarta and I have a 1982 pocket flyer with the laminated birchwood in brown visible. I would have to dig out my 1981 catalog to see which handle material was featured.
By the way, pommels were made of nickel silver. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I knew you were up to the task. I went around the knife show asking the same question this weekend and nobody knew what I was talking about! The General is all they know. The one I liked did have black micarta handles but I think they did have a special edition with the reddish brown wood with silver-colored pommels. Now I have a little bit harder question. Where can I get one of these? And how much should I expect to pay? (Is this a loaded question or what?)

I think it's one heck of a knife ! I've seen them at gun /knife shows and occasionly on e-bay.(thats where I got my micarta handled one)Last year prices seemed to range between $100-150

Thanks Mike o. I figured gun/knife or e-bay.
I wanted to get a handle on the price so I could know how much to smuggle. I'm married, you know.

If any body out there has seen one, let me know- Thanks ahead
