So, Wife sent me up to the weekend place this past weekend by myself. Couldn't ask for a more perfect opportunity to catch up on all the mods I had been thinking about doing but hadn't started, or to try to move further along with the mods already underway. So I loaded up all my toys, tools, and bought enough chemicals to poison a small country.

Here's the view from my mountain paradise:

Here's a shot after I got everything laid out but before I got to work:

And here's a shot after I was well underway:

Heck, I even setup a second station inside:

It got hectic after a while, as I was bouncing between a knife in the etch and a knife being stripped and something with dye drying and sanding or filing or or or...

I dyed hemp!
h.jpg

I dyed micarta! (and filed, and sanded, and oiled...)
g.jpg

I cut leather with my phat bob!
j.jpg

I put balsamic vinegar on stuff!
i.jpg

I put knives in the oven!
k.jpg

While stupidly wearing gloves with holes in the fingers!
l.jpg

I stripped (knives)!
d.jpg

I testing cold blue/bleach etching on a cheap machete that I found!
e.jpg

I etched a Warthog!
f-1.jpg

I talked to a hummingbird!
p.jpg

I made a strop!
m1.jpg

I used that strop to fix the edge of my Wohlwend nessie!

2 1/2 days of pure modulation. I learned so much, in many cases at the expense of a cool knife. Plus I had so much fun.

I took a ton more photos so I plan to eventually getting around to making threads for what I did on each blade. It'll take me a while, plus I took my BK11 on a nice hike so that needs a thread too. All in good time. But for now, here are teasers of how each turned out.

BK2:
Stripped, patinad, oiled, and gave my LE BK10 micarta slabs the spa treatment. Already had the CRKS kydex sheath, but now... what a package.
bk2.jpg

BK10:
Got the rust out of the logos, sanded to a satiny finish, put on cocobolo scales (attempted to make liners too... more on this later)
bk10.jpg

BK11:
Stripped, etched by Beckerhead number into it, then did a blue/bleach design etch, then patinad, then did a brown dyed leather and hemp wrapped handle and lanyard. Plus one of Nick's custom sheaths.
bk11.jpg

Cold Steel Trail Hawk:
Sanded, etched my Beckerhead number and design into it, patinad, and put a higher grind on. Also stained the handle... got more to do with this one.

Warthog:
Sanded, blue/bleach etched, patinad. Not happy with how this turned out... more in the future thread.

Wohlwend nessie:
Now has no edge dings and is back to being insanely sharp.

Plenty of photos and information still to come. Thanks for reading.

I like it, all! Dude, we should all be so lucky! Looks like a great time, and you spent that time wisely.

This thread is heaven for my apartment-bound mind. I love the layout and straightforward, confidently excited narrative. I talked to a hummingbird! (these are the things I notice as well when I'm at one with nature lol..."I made friends with a raccoon, I watched a snail etc." Great work on your blades, and I love the BK11, I used to do alot of hemp work when I was younger (sounds like i'm a stoner) and have really only been using paracord, meanwhile 2 spools of hemp sit in my closet. I think I'll have to give that leather and hemp idea a try sometime. Great work, can't wait to see your other threads.

Looks like a good time. Keep up the good work!

It all looks great. Are better pics of the warthog going to the Kabar forum? I only ask cuz I did three different etchings this week and learned alot so there may be some saving it. Did you sand the hog? use a neutralizer to stop the reaction?

Looks like a great time at a beautiful spot. Pretty good mental floss.

Thanks for the nice words everyone.

Clich, once I have more time I'm doing a post on the 'hog mods in the KA-BAR forum, yeah. But I was going to put the detailed etch discussion and photos in your etching thread.

As far as saving it... while yes, the etch went some places I didn't like (including the edge, gah), it's not that big of a deal to me. That'll be something I can sand/sharpen out, and the Warthog is going to be my truck knife anyway.

The real problem with my 'hog mods wasn't the etch. It was two things... once I stripped it, I tried to sand out the grind marks on the blade and just absolutely could not put a dent in those things. I wanted to do a satin finish, but that's an absolute joke... I'd have to sand it for a year. The second problem was the patina... I used Plums, which ended up looking BEAUTIFUL on the BK2 and BK11, but it came out yellow and limp and lame on the Warthog.

I'd had visions of this crazy apocalyptic chopper, even thought about giving it it's own hemp-wrapped handle, and the messed up etch would actually have served it well for that. But right now it's just kind of lame looking... factory grind marks everywhere, totally visible under the etch, and a not-very-exciting yellow color here and there. So... needs more work!

Looks like fun! Nice place also but......... talking to hummingbird = not working in a well ventilated area ;)
