I just got invited to go deer hunting for my first time when the season opens. I'm very excited about it. Being an animal lover I was a little apprehensive at first, but now I can't wait until Thanksgiving. Any advice would be much appreciated. -DT

Dont' worry too much about the animal. We had a bad frost late this spring and there is almost no nut crop. They will really be hurting by January. Likely any deer I get will really be saved starvation.

Don't get wrapped up much in fancy camo, expensive rifles, wildcat calibers, or a ton of accessories. It's more important to dress to push off moisture and keep warm - military surplus does well, cheap. Watch your scent - don't wear the same boots you walked around the gas station concrete on. A 30-30 properly sighted in will do well - shoot a box at the range to get familiar with it, they are common and relatively inexpensive.

Enjoy your time in the woods. Deer prefer a warm sunlit slope mornings to wake up to, just below the crest of the land, near water and food. It will be relatively thick cover hard to get to, especially if it offers lots of concealment for them. "Near water and food" means within a mile saunter, although their may be plenty of puddles to choose from closer at hand. Get familiar with what food sources they prefer that time of year, their travel corridors, habits and tendencies. I strongly recommend "Deer and Deer Hunting" magazine for the wealth of information and lack of beer, truck, and junk ads. These folks are dedicated deer biologists who really love the subject.

Watch chipmunks, be patient, and enjoy. It's time away from the noise of civilization.

Hunting season goes fast guys, I try to hunt as many days as I possibly can.

Gonna try deer again this year. Did it for the first time last year and had a great time.

Debating on equipment right now. Could use my great plains rifle again, but thinking about doing the shotgun thing instead. My winchester 1300 only has a 28" vent rib barrel for it and I don't like it for slugs, so I might pick up another gun. Aftermarket barrels for the winchester cost as much as I paid for the gun. Can't decide whether to get an 870, or mossberg and stick with the pump......or if I want to buy something fancy like a savage 210f (bolt action dedicated slug gun). Have to do some tire kicking.

As far as gear, I've got about a dozen different knives to chose from, and might make a new one before the season starts.I gave away the knife I used last year. Pobably just carharts and an orange vest beyond that. I can't afford to be fancy :D

Adeofblades-

I did not mean to hijack your thread. Thanks to all who have chimed in with advice. I'm getting very excited. Beau 5278- We will be hunting in western MD. I bought a Remington model 700 CDL 30/06 with a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 last night at Bass Pro. Also picked up some 800g Danner boots and a scent lock bag. I'm sure I'll be spending a lot more in the near future. Ouch. But if you're gonna do something you should do it right, eh? I am pleased with my new equipment thus far. I figure I'll probably have this stuff for a long time to come. I plan to carry my Busse muddy AD and some sort of folder, too. Now, back on topic! What are you talkin'? What are you huntin'? And what are you wearing? -DT

Early season Teal opens here in south Texas this Saturday. I will be wearing breathable OD chest waders covered with my water fowler jacket from Bass Pro. I will be carrying my BM Mini Rukus and shooting my 12 gauge Benelli SBE. My spread will consist of 30 dekes … 2 dozen Teal and 6 Mallards … all hens. I will also have one Baby Mojo (again a hen) in the spread to add movement.

And of course my hunting partner, Whiskey, will be with me.

My pit bag will most likely include the following equipment: duck calls (teal call, single-reed duck call, 3-in-1 duck whistle and dog whistle), LED (green) flashlight, mosquito repellant, sunglasses, binoculars, 1 to 2 boxes of ammo, chokes for the Benelli, EMT gel and children’s antihistamine (first aid for the dog), Milspec CLP and wipe-down cloth for the shotgun, extra ear plugs, face mask and seal skin gloves.

As the weather gets colder the breathable waders will get swapped out for 3 mm neoprene waders and I will end up looking something like this:

went hunting this morning for ptarmigan wife shot 3 , my best friend shot 1... me zero , been hunting twice for bears this year with my recurve and browning FDX #1

didnt see a thing went out for birds but almost became grizzly soup last weekend ..he was eating salmon on the river and walked right on top of him he didnt hear me , with him in the wash below me and then he charged me hard a few times started popping his jaws when i ddint move ..this went on for about 20 minutes till he lost interest in me ..
i love being out there this time of the year morning is crisp but not cold and the woods just come to life .. i feel like i could hike for days in weather like that .

we hunt near johnson city, TX on about 1K acres, & hunt mostly dove, deer and some feral hogs too. this year am usinhg the following for hunting:

doves - S&W 1000 20 gauge auto 26" bbl improved cyl choke.

deer & pigs - either a savage '99 .300 savage w/a redfield 3X9 scope, or a browning lever rifle .243 w/a weaver 4X scope.

most always pack a pistol too, usually a glock 32C .357SIG in a bianchi OWB holster.

also always have my surefire M3, L4 and fenix P2D-CE.

use a buck fixed blade for skinning, a greco recon for camp stuff, and my EKI CQC12 for utility stuff.

as far as cammys i usually wear some old chocolate chip desert BDUs with a realtree camo jacket from sams, and either nike high top basketball shoes or old army boots. it really doesnt get tooooo cold hear, usually anyway.

I'll be hunting pheasant in Montana with my Berretta 12 gauge over/under ultralight deluxe and a large sebenza in my pocket.

I'm torn. I'll do some hunting, but I love trout fishing. Here are pics of my last two big hauls. Shot the boar at about 140 yards with a 30-30. The trout I caught on the last cast of the day. 24 inches long on the button, biggest brown I've ever caught.

Hope I get a nice deer this winter to post some pics of. Just picked up a new Tikka T3 270wsm to put it down with.

Its about time to get fired up :D
Bow season starts here in about a week, although I probably won't do much about it.

Just picked up a mossberg 500 with 24" fully rifled, ported barrel, so now I have a slug gun. Have 4 different types of slugs to try out in it now and figure out what I want to use for deer season. Trying to avoid the $3/shot laser guided hollow point explosive tipped kills on both ends sabots, but at the same time the thought of slinging copper solids at 1700 fps is kind of tempting
