I left last Monday, for my 6 day Deer and Elk, archery hunting trip. My best friend for 35 years and I always hunt together, and one week out of the season, we take a week for just a guys trip...
This trip just reaffirmed that, you don't have to kill something to have a successful season, even though it would be really nice. Every morning we left from camp, and made about a 5 mile hike. Every day, we got into Elk. We located them on Monday morning, and were able to get back into them every day. There was one branch bull ( 6 point), a couple smaller rag horns and spikes too. The rest were cows. We were as close as 20 yards, but never could get a good clean shot on them. They were either turned at to much of an angle, facing away, or had brush blocking them.
The rut is just starting here, and we got to hear the big bull bugle. He didn't do it a lot, but its always priceless when you get to watch them when they bugle... It won't be long and the big bulls will be pushing out the smaller ones.
The first part of the season, we got to see a fair number of bucks, but they just seemed to disappear. In the 6 days, we only saw 2 bucks, but that was o.k, the Elk are much more exciting.
We still have one more week of the season, so there is still a chance to get something, but even if I don't, I got to see more Elk in 6 days, then most people will see in a lifetime. Thats the great , but also frustrating thing about archery hunting, but I wouldn't change it for the world.
The bad part of the trip was getting a text message from my wife on Thursday. We were only able to get service in a couple spots, so I would check to make sure everything was alright. She told me my moms cousin had passed away. It was very sad, because he was a great guy, and he loved to hunt too. He lived in a small town about 20 miles from where we hunt, and he had been up to the same area many times. He always told me I better come by the house if I got something, and this year I really thought I was going to do that. He was one of those people that was always smiling, and everyone that met him, liked him. Hopefully I can get something and dedicate it to him...
