in my knife making world.

The Weird:

I was told by a company that is offering a knife like object that 1018CRS undergoes heat-treating by being laser cut and thus is a capable cutter when it drops out of the sheet. (if you guys know something I don't please enlighten me)

I suffered through and inquisition by another newb maker (like myself) about heat-treating. Even after he admitted that what I was saying matched his mentors it was not sufficient. He wanted to use info obtained in a previous conversation about O1 to HT 154CM. This included a 1500 degree austentizing temp, no foil, and oil quench. He then wanted to know why I kept talking about testing my knives, actually asking "do you cut stuff"? It ended up being an hour of time I can never recapture. (after this and some of the stuff here I'm wore out)

The Good:

I visited a friend/mentor knife maker and he gifted me a brand spanking new bench top hardness tester!

Finished 2 knives.

That's quite a gift! And a weird conversation.. I don't see how it's possible, a laser powerful enough to cut steel is going to cut it so fast there's no way it would heat it thoroughly.. even if it was beveling the blade "grind" too. At least I'd love to see it if it did.. I like lasers :P

the 1018 crs being hardened and being a capable cutter. Well um er I guess the term capable cutter means different things to different people.
I doubt it would be labeled that in my shop.

You have a hardness tester?! Crap, David, I just want a band saw and and your wheels.

Off the record, what's your favorite stainless?

Well, I'm glad that OUR conversation didn't end up in your weird section. See you tomorrow to check out the tester and see what I did to my A-2. Maybe we can water quench some of your CPM 154...

Not to brag; but wait until I get up enough nerve and post a shop tour!

The only stainless I have used is 154 CM. It cuts, grinds, and hardens well (i'm a stickler for research and had heard some horror stories). I have some CPM154 I am using a couple of Loveless designs; I want that finer structure for the polished finish.

1018 hardened by laser? The heat affected zone on a laser cut part is small, even IF somehow the laser generated some marginal added hardness around the edge of the blank (probably just the hardness of iron oxide scale) it would be less than a millimeter deep. I HATE that kind of misinformation.

Nice score on the hardness tester. I'm jealous.

Some guy in the shop probably cut himself on the corner of a fresh cut piece, so suddenly they're knife edges.

I really WISH 154cm was that easy to heat treat, ooooh man do I wish.
