Good morning everyone.

Some of you may remember me, i used to be a (beginner) maker on the boards. I've been been in the navy for about 2 years now and I finally have a place to work again. I just set up a small shop and will now be able to continue what I love. I have to say I'm pretty excited, my new shop it great.

I have been lurking on the blade forums regularly for the last few years, I would just like to say that this may be the most helpful resource for beginner knife makers anywhere on the internet.

I drove up to Michigan last week over thanksgiving and I filled up my pickup with all of my tools. it was a long ride (as my Tacoma wasn't meant to hold all that weight) but made it back safe and IM ready to rock. IM stationed in cherry point NC and there isn't much to do here after work except get into trouble so I needed a productive outlet. Plus it wont be hard to move knives on a marine base ;) . I have only told a few people in my clinic and the word of a custom knife maker on base is spreading like wild fire. So hopefully I will all go well, so I can keep doing it. I couldn't be in a better place to sell knives, Im on a marine air station and Im one hour from camp lejeune and I have a lot of friends in 2nd MARDIV.

I look forward to participating more on the boards and learning from the seemingly endless knowledge on these forums.

off topic: I had to share this because it is awesome. I have a friend here in the clinic and he is a bit of a knife enthusiast so we get along pretty good. anyways we are both out at sears because I had to pick up some switch keys for my grinder and while I looked he was on the phone with his father. He told his father that he was out shopping with a friend who was getting back into knife making, so his father asks if I am on the bladeforums. I say yes and tell my buddy my user name. Then it gets weird and his dad says "are u kidding me" I think I know who that is. so I take the phone and it turns out that we had a IM conversation before I joined the navy and after talking with him I remembered our conversation. so when I got back to my room I looked it up and it was really funny. in his last message there is a reference to his son that is joining the navy a few months later and I might run into him. this whole thing blew my mind in the middle of sears, what are to odds that I would end up in the same "tiny" clinic in the navy and that we would very even find out. this whole thing is a little crazy, it's a small world. I had to share that.

It sounds like you are raring to go. Being a knife maker in and around the military should help you to build a base of customers.

Enjoy your new shop and have fun when you are making those knives. I think its one of the most important ingredients that makes for a good blade.

Thank you for your service, Fred

Great that you are doing well and getting back into knife making.
You are right that there is little to do except get drunk and get into trouble around there.

BTW, If you haven't learned the hard way.....don't speed on the long drag from the gate to the flight line....or you will get to know the Provost Marshall.

Stay out of the Pirates Den ( probably long gone now, but it used to be right outside the gate in Havelock).

I put the radar, IFF, and communications equipment on that base 36 years ago, and spent a lot of time doing "stuff" for the government in the woods over by Onslow Beach.
One time they had to make me a Marine for six weeks to participate in an exercise. To avoid shooting me (it nearly happened), they issued me a uniform , ID card, and everything. Then they issued me a Gunny Sgt. with a side arm to accompany me. Problem solved. It is a long story that is best told in Around the Grinder.

There are some great makers down that way. Hope you hook up with one. It might make HT easier.

Welcome back J!

For everyone else and for what its worth, I'm the BF member that J-siah had spoke to at Sears.

My son called saying that he was helping a knife maker set up shop. I thought nothing of it 'til he text me a pic of some of the knives and I thought, "I wonder of he has ever been on BF?".

I called my son back and found out it was J. As he said we had PM'd back and forth regarding recruiting because my son was about to sign up. Turns out the world is pretty small because they're working together at Cherry Point.

J, I've rounded up some goodies for you including a couple new 3M respirators. I'll get in touch with Frank and get it down to you. Once the holidays are over I'll be ordering a knife too.

Good to have ya back.
