Hi guys and galls, I'm getting really restless with all this lovely weather here in Utah and all this talk of hiking and what not. So I'm planning a camping trip for the last part of the month or early next month.

Is there anyone from the Cantina that might be interested in joining me for a 2 or 3 day trip? I'm considering the Mount Nebo Wilderness Area, Manti Lasal Sanpete District (Sky Line Drive area) or possibly Maple Canyon. All 3 areas are in the mountains around where I grew up. The Provo Canyons aren't bad this time of year either as long as there isn't snow mid way up where the good sites are. Actually that applies to every place I want to go right now. Hence the reason for later in the month or early next month.

a one or two night trip would be great. On the over nighter I'd want to head out around 3:30 to 4pm Friday and come back Saturday evening about the same time. 2 night would mean leaving either Thursday and coming back Saturday evening or leaving Friday and coming back Sunday afternoon.

I've been talking with neighbors in my complex and they like the idea. I'm planning on doing a group Dutch oven dinner cooked by yours truely, some hiking before and or after, then a group breakfast, hiking, climbing or what ever activities are avaliable in the area a picknick lunch and snacks on the trail them heading back to camp in the evening. A 3 day trip would have more group meals and more safe goofing off.

For anyone thats intersted, It's going to be a Coed trip. There are already a few girls signed up if their work and school schedules allow.

If anyone is intersted in coming down for such a trip, please let me know. I'd love to have you guys join me if possible. If anyone does come from out of town, I'll cover your food. ;)

Anyone have any thoughts, feelings or ideas of fun activies? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Heber

Munk, they sure are. Maple Canyon is a World Renown Rock Climbing spot just South of Mount Nebo and West of the Manti Lasal Sanpete District. I'm open to campsites a distance away, but not for my first trip. I want to do something kind of local that I already know. Been a few years since I've lead an expedition out in the wilderness and want to start over with familure teritory first. ;) BTW I'm thinking of heading to Southern Cali this summer with some friends to go camping in my old stomping grounds. Might have to make it up your way too if I can afford it. I want this to be the summer of camping/hiking.

Tiktock, wish I could fly you down here or fly up to where you are. I spent October of '94 in Sumner Washington. It was beautifull and the trails around there and Seattle were great! Though not sure if thats where you hail from.

Nasty, you were one of the first I thought of when I started thinking about camping. Let me know if there is a time this summer you will be back this way (preferably 2 to 3 weeks in advance) and I'll schedule something for you. :)

Gents, this is an open invitation to any knife/outdoors lover. If the end of the month doesn't work for someone let me know, and I'll see what I can work out on my end. I can get just about any weekend off now as long as I do it 2+ weeks in advance and don't do it every week.

Travel has been cut back quite a bit, but if I get to UT, I will certainly let you know as soon as I do.

Thanks Heber...it was a nice visit we had last time.

I,m just getting to drag the tent out to make sure its O:K: . Utah is a far piece for me to walk . I,ll have to be there in spirit . Aside from that I have a prior commitment in the Ottawa area at the end of the month . I,d much rather camp in Utah as its a might bit colder up my way .

Takin' the boy out campin' for his B-day on Friday. Since we're still pretty early in this years break up cycle I'll be here in the Cantina in spirit, rather than wet, muddy, and cold....:D

Hmmmm. "wet, muddy, and cold"
Didn''t we ban those guys for excessive pessimism?

I missed tenting out in March - too muddy. The other Winter months were nice - cold enough but not too cold. In fact, we had a pretty mild Winter around here. We had less than half the snow we had last year.

Utah has some pretty country for a fact. I recall driving up some long river canyon when I was heading east years ago in late May. Some sort of fairly large white and black brids were all along the road -- generally configured like a crestless jay and about that size.

I want to go. Heber has a knack for making everything sound fun, even being in a tent and cold.

Bah....skeeters aint out yet, no tourists to speak of yet, stompin' 'round lookin' fer critters, lettin' the dog run, shootin' at some ice chunks at my favorite shootin' spot...makin' a big ole roarin' campfire with the 17" Ang Knola that rarely gets used any more...gettin' to help the boy break in his new backpack and camping equipment...

It oughta be a good ole time, inspite of all the mud and slush....

It sounds great Heber, but I've already put in vacation time at work for early August. Unless the MWKK doesn't work out and you could wait until Memorial Day weekend, I'll have to pass on this one.

Oh, man, am I jealous Heber. Hiking and biking are my only passions, and here I -- a native Utahn -- languish in Houston. Actually it's been gorgeous weather here the last 7 months, so I only have my laziness to blame for not getting out more. Unfortunately Heber, I won't be back in my beloved Wasatch and Uintah ranges until June 30th, missing you by a month. Even then, the family reunions will have me firmly in their grasp.

Did get out on a Father-Son campout this weekend though. Got to carry a 13" Balance and clear some brush (partly to get my son some long sticks with which to play "pyro-boy" in the bonfire). Funny, the Balance is my shortest blade and the other Fathers there were calling it a "machete". Good thing I didn't haul out the big AK or M-43. They probably would have asked me to camp far away from them and wear a cow-bell.

Best to you and I hope you find a few more compadres to go with you.
