Hey everyone, sorry to say it has been quite a while since I've been on BF. However, I AM BACK! With California deer season coming up in 4 weeks, I need some help picking out a hunting knife. I have been looking very closely at the Buck Vanguard with wood or rubberized handle and am very intrigued by it. I DO NOT want to spend over $80 and I would like a fixed blade. Any suggestions and reasoning would be great!!

Check out the line of Queen fixed blade knives. I used an Amber Bone Bear Head Hunter last year and the D2 steel performed great on Texas whitetail deer. They are very well made knives and can be found on the net in your price range.

There are a bunch that will work well for under $80. Any of the Marttiini Condor knives with the rubber grips or the Bucklite Max, both under $30, are great. The Alpha Hunter or Vanguard are excellent. The Queen shown above is great. The Russell Deer Hunter in D2 is around $55 or so. The Cold Steel Pendleton, either Pendleton Lite or the more expensive version, are excellent. I might also mention I prefer the Queen drop point versions. They can be had with an oak handle for $70.

I'm looking to purchase a Boker Orca 2 for hunting this year. The blade style lends itself well for that purpose.

I had a rubber handled vanguard and regrettably sold it. IMO, the design is the perfect deer knife and the 420HC is adequate for field dressing and skinning. You might want to get yourself a fixed blade Bucklite too. Similar design and blade, but can be had for about 1/3 of what you're willing to spend. That Spyderco Bill Moran is a sweet hunting knife for the price, too.

Check out the Becker bk17. I like it much more than the vanguard of Benchmade Rant I previously used.

Thanks everyone for all of the replies. For some reason I am leaning towards wood handled knives. I like the looks of them I guess ;). As of right now I am leaning towards the Buck Vanguard. However, I also do like the Becker BK16, Queens knives, as well as the Gerber Profile. Keep all the suggestions coming!

Are you planning on dressing the deer with this knife?

IF so I'd avoid wood unless it stabilized and not too smooth... Also the grber profile and comparable knives are going to make the job harder than it has to be. Seriously look at something like a Mora, choose your flavour, for well less than $80. Or spend a little mroe and pick up a really good custom fixed blade from the makers on here.

What about Benchmade’s Bone Collector’s? They are in D2 steel and you have a choice of Green/Black G-10, Black G-10 or Walnut Handles. Shipped they would be $80 - $90, that may be just a little over budget but something to consider.

Buck Alpha hunter is really nice, but I would get the rubber handled one over the wood for its' good grip when wet.

Good luck this season,
Connor

This is a solid recommendation, the D2 steel would provide excellent performance.

How about an ESEE-3? They are great knives.

Good luck on your hunt. You staying in state? If so, dress light. It will be hot.

I have a gerber profile, and it sucks. it gets left in the jeep as a back up. I got myself a cheap kershaw antelope hunter 2, and I love it. I was even looking at the newer Kershaw Diskin Hunter or a fixed blade skyline or field knife (packrat) for this years hunt. All are $50 or under.
