Helloooo Fellow Fans of JK,I got the Pocket Muk blank from John last week & am going to put these scales on it,but I would like to fatten up the handle a bit with some liners & would like some input from ya'll.(they will lighten up with shaping/sanding)
I'm thinking 1/16"-1/8" brown, black or tan micarta,or maybe some brass.
So wad'ya think, maybe a different color than the choices listed?(orange, red,OD?)(I'm not a fan of blue so don't even suggest it):p
The pins will be 2) 1/8" brass & a brass tube for the lanyard hole.
Lets hear it guys,I need to get the liners ordered so I can get this puppy done!
Thanks in advance,
Myke

PS:Great design Jeff, the Pocket Muk has been on my list since first visiting John's forum a couple of years ago & I'm kicking myself for not getting one sooner.

If you go with black fibre spacer it will give a nice contrast from steel/black/white/outside color . A red might make the transition pop as well...

I don't think I can come up with anything better then the ones you've listed, i tend to like a contrasting/complimentary color, I like sitflyer's idea about contrasting the materials though, that sounds pretty cool.

Brass. It will give it that classy, olde timey look that I love so much.

I would suggest white or bone paper micarta. It would transition nicely to the stag.

I really don't like the look of black & white together & will probably stain the exposed bone a lighter shade of brown/amber.
I should have stated my plan to stain the bone after sanding/shaping in the OP eh?
Red is always a good choice IMO,it goes with everything.

Leaning towards complimenting vs contrasting.:p

Thank you for the compliment. I'm really looking forward to seeing your finished stag scales. :)

That is a really cool blade shape, I look forward to whatever you do choose, and can't wait to see this one coming along. I think it will be a real classy knife.

Brass will compliment the pins, I've seen copper used on a fixed blade recently and that looked good also but it would contrast with the brass pins unless you went with copper pins.

Ooh - Brass would be very nice.

A lot of "classic" stags have a deep red or maroon, and if you search around, you can see a few that have black, white, maroon multi-layered liners.

I still like the brass the best though.

OK,it looks like brass is the most popular & I agree with all that chose it,best of all I can get it for free.

Thanks guys, brass it is.(Possibly with some real thin red & black on either side of the brass.)

Okay,it's done!
I didn't go with brass, just black & red for liners, sorry for the not so great pics.
I'm lucky to have gotten these few with my POS P&S.

Now I know why John won't work with Stag(or bone),that stuff stinks when cutting & sanding.:barf:
It is otherwise reall easy to work though & I do love the look of bone. The shine was accomplished with just 1200 grit paper.
After what I thought was the final sand I tried staining it with RIT Brown dye,but it didn't give the desired results,so I tried soaking it in some real strong, hot coffee.(what can I say,I read about it on the WWW:rolleyes:)
All the dye & coffee did after sitting for about 20 mins each was seep into all the little pores & all the sand marks I'd missed(& boy those sand marks really stood out.)
I was hoping for a nice mellow brown color like a coffee stain on a napkin or carmel if you know what I mean.
Anyhoo,I went back at it with the 400 & 1200,then decided to try some walnut wood stain.
Eh,a little darker, but not quite what I had envisioned. Not that I don't like it,it has that nice old pocket worn look with all the nooks, cranys, pores & cracks filled with stain IMO.
I must add that the pins were a pita to do too,I wanted them flat so I could peen them,so I had to sand the surrounding bone down & boy was it a pain to get it sanded smooth & not take too much of the surrounding bone out.(those grind marks sure show good with the stain.:))
That's what the pencil with eraser was for,I'd fold a strip of paper over the easer for getting into the pin recess.
For the lanyard tube I just sanded the whole end flat.
So there you have it..my first & possibly last foray in bone handling a knife.

Oh crap,I just remembered I have a damascus stick tang bowie I need to get done for a friend to give to his son.
His son works for Army Intel & is coming back from Astan in august.
It's getting an antler crown handle from a shed they found together years ago.
Oh well, looks like there is more bone in my future.:barf: :)

Thanks for lookin' & ya'll have a good weekend.
